He was born April 2, 1912, in Plymouth, Utah, the 7th child of Joseph William and Edith Maud Silvester Burnett. His early years were spent in Plymouth, Utah and Holbrook, Idaho working on the family farm. He was educated in Holbrook and Malad, Idaho. He learned the value of hard work at an early age and practiced this throughout his life. He married Valerie Hardman on December 3, 1936 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were blessed with two daughters. In 1939, they moved to Midvale, Utah where for seven years he operated a large dry farm for Landes Tractor Company. He started his own trucking business in 1946 buying and selling grain. They moved to Brigham City in 1956 where he continued his business for 35 years. He was also employed by Evans Grain and Elevator Company of Ogden as a grain buyer. After his retirement, he and Valerie moved to Logan and spent their winters in St. George. He was a high priest in the LDS church, had a strong testimony, and held many callings over the years. He found great joy and proudly served as a ward clerk for 10 years and stake clerk for eight years. He received the greatest joy from his family and never tired of the visits from children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Valerie of Logan; two daughters, Gwen Oakeson (Ken), Brigham City, and Dalene Hansen (Reid), Farmington; one brother, Jim Burnett, St. George, and a sister, Joan Brady, Pingree, Idaho; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, one sister and a grandson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2002 at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the services. CALDWELL----The Idaho Genealogical Society will kickoff their annual statewide conference and meeting Saturday, May 18th at the Caldwell Public Library. Canyon County Family Scanners are hosting this year's IGS Conference. Family Scanners along with the local chapter of DAR are providing their genealogy collection for individual research in the Idaho Room of the library. The conference begins at 10 o'clock with registration and signing up for afternoon workshops. Rick Ardinger, Executive Director for the Idaho Humanities Council, will give an overview of IHC funding and programs. Linda Morton-Keithley, Administrator for the Idaho State Historical Society Library and Archives, will preview what's new at ISHS and projections on the new building. A catered luncheon is scheduled for 12:15 PM. "Historical Quilts of Idaho" will be the keynote address at the IGS Conference. Sharon Harleman Tandy, published author and designer, will discuss the pioneer craft with a slide presentation and display many of Idaho's finest quilts. Tandy is a native of the Pacific Northwest and Idaho for 24 years. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Boise State University in 1986 and a Master's degree in Quilt and Textile History in 1998. The Boise native is a member of the Idaho Humanities Council Speakers Bureau and has addressed audiences throughout the United States. Participants are encouraged to bring their own quilts for helping in the dating process. Tandy's presentation is made possible with funds from the Idaho Humanities Council and the Boise Cascade Corporation. Concurrent workshops will run throughout the afternoon until 4 PM. "Cactus" Peterson, 82, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002 at his home in North Ogden, following a brief illness. He was born December 2, 1919 in Malad, Idaho, a son of Elof Roger and Clara Jeppson Peterson. On July 28, 1941, Lars married Lila Mae Bullough in Pocatello, Idaho. Lila preceded him in death on March 25, 1994. He spent his youth in Huntsville and Ogden, graduating from Ogden High School. He received his Bachelor"s Degree from Utah State University and Master"s Degree from U.C.L.A. Lars was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Navy aboard LST 218 in the South Pacific. He lived and began his teaching career in Soda Springs, Idaho and Lehi, Utah, prior to living in Ontario, Riverside and Brea, California from 1955 through 1971. He returned to Ogden in 1971 to continue his teaching career in junior high and high school. He retired in 1993. Lars was a member of the Golden Hours and the Oldies but Goodies Harmonica Bands. He collected antique sheet music and enjoyed doing leatherwork and listening to amateur musicians. One of the greatest enjoyments of his life was the time he spent fishing in Idaho. His ready smile and quick wit will be missed by all who knew him. Surviving are one son, Brian K. Peterson (Shauna R. Mayeda), Salt Lake City; and one granddaughter, Aimee K. Peterson, St. George. Lars is also survived by two brothers, Sheldon "Ted" Peterson, Luning, Nevada; Jerry Peterson, Redlands, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Maynard and Dean; and three sisters, Olive, Beth and Doris. On November 30, 1973, she married Michael Beecher and their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had served in many callings. Having a passion to serve, Donna taught at the Malad Middle School. She was a mother to many and a treasured friend to others. She is survived by her parents, Ferrell and Carolyn Neal of Snowville, UT; husband of 29 years, Mike; two sons, Matt (Ronda) Beecher and Chase Beecher and one grandson, Chance (Bubba) Beecher, all of Holbrook. She was preceded in death by an infant, Emily Jo. Donna will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched. She was active in the LDS church and held offices in various auxiliary organizations of the church. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her husband and family. She is survived by her son, Clyde (and Margaret M.) Rees, Malad, ID; and a daughter, Linda R. Wang, Cottonwood Heights, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. She was born November 24, 1943 in Malad, Idaho to Samuel Verlin and Mary Elizabeth Smith Williams. She was raised and educated in Malad. Dixie married Jerry D. Bush September 14, 1982 in the Logan LDS Temple. They began their married life on the family ranch in Arbon Valley, living there during the summer months and moving to Malad in the winter. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held many Church positions throughout her life, including a Primary teacher since she was the age of 14. She was Primary president twice and loved working with children. Other Church positions included pianist for Primary, Relief Society, Sacrament Meeting and also for opening exercises for the Priesthood brethren. She was Ward Relief Society President, and Stake Missionary for the Holbrook area. She was involved with the Cub Scout program for 10 years, serving as Pack Chairman and Den Leader. Dixie was chairman for the Pennies by the Inch Drive and the March of Dimes and served as district chairman for the American Cancer Society for a number of years. Her favorite thing to do was taking photos of family events, vacations and activities in the organizations she was involved in. She did it for the fun and enjoyment. She was the instigator of the "Bush Archives" located in her home, containing volumes and volumes of photo albums. Dixie"s favorite holiday was April Fools Day. Many will attest to the fact that she loved to pull pranks on family and friends. She loved nature, all animals (especially the stray, homeless ones), and the outdoors. She loved people and had an "open door policy." If you stopped in at meal time, she always put another plate on the table. Visitors were always welcome. She was always concerned about others and their welfare, even when her death was declining. At the time of her death she was the Department President of the American Legion Auxiliary, State of Idaho for 2001-2002. She had been a member of the Auxiliary for ten years, also serving as Vice President and Historian for the State Auxiliary. She was also currently serving as historian for the Malad Unit. She personally hand created approximately ten scrapbooks for the local unit. She enjoyed the friendships and association of the members in the Auxiliary and chose for her theme as State President, "Dixie, Where the Heart Is." Dixie was involved in the Oneida County Farm Bureau for several years. She was named Farm Wife in 1987, then served as co-chair of the County Women"s Committee for four years. She helped with fundraisers for the Idaho Grain Producers, donating several quilts. She was involved with the Idaho Association of Counties with their scholarship program, donating a quilt each year. Because of her generous donations the scholarship in southeastern Idaho will not be named the "Dixie Bush Scholarship Fund", in her honor. She was a friend to all and was loved and appreciated throughout the state by the members of these organizations. Dixie is survived by her husband; children, Troy Jerry Bush and Susie (Tim) Gauthier of Malad; grandchildren, Jake and Brooke Wuthrich, Ty (Tim) Gauthier of Malad; grandchildren, Jake and Brooke Wuthrich, Ty Owings and Kyra Bush; one sister, Elda Mae (Ron) Price, Malad; three brothers, Wayne (Kathleen) Williams, Malad; Don (Mary Alice) Williams, Smithfield, UT; Tom (JoAnne) Williams, Tualatin, OR; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Burt Williams and Verlin Williams. He died of natural causes after a 25 year battle with multiple sclerosis. Richard was the son of Matthew Fifield and Louise Perry Bird, of Logan. He as was born in Malad, Idaho, on Feb. 1, 1942. Richard grew up on the family farm in Holbrook, Idaho, and spent winters in Logan going to school. He graduated from Logan High, got a bachelor’s degree from Utah State University and a doctorate in physics from BYU. In 1967 Richard married Twila Davis, of Logan, in the Logan LDS Temple. Until his health prevented employment, Richard worked as a senior scientist at the Solar Energy Research Institute (now the National Renewable Energy Research Laboratory) in Denver, Colo. Richard is survived by his wife Twila of Lakewood; his children, Trisha (Mrs. Axel Leimer), Raquelle (Mrs. Marc Johnson), Tiffany (Mrs. Russ Axtell), Travis (and Heidi) Bird and Heather (Mrs. Nathan Jackson); and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by seven siblings: Perry Bird, Helen Smith, Willa Magruder, Carol Johnson, Maurine Douglas, Ann Hansen and Lou Woodland. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, David Bird. A funeral for Richard was held in Lakewood on Tuesday, April 23, and a graveside service will be held in the Logan Cemetery on Thursday, April 25, at 11 a.m. All friends and familymembers are welcome to attend.

Elmer passed away in 1983. She married Woodrow Peterson and they later divorced. Clarice was talented in music, playing the piano by ear and loved singing. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing and bowling. She also served as a volunteer Pink Lady at the hospital. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and enjoyed serving in various callings and attending the temple. Clarice is survived by a daughter, Patricia (Reynold) Tripp of Malad; three sons, Darrell (Wanda) Lewis of Tremonton; Terry (Norma Jean) Lewis of Hooper, Utah; Steven Lewis of Layton, Utah; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edith Jessop of Logan, Utah; Afton Smith of Smithfield, Utah. Her greatest joy in life was her family. She was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many positions of leadership and responsibility. She received great satisfaction in service to others and she was an avid genealogist, spending many years of tireless research of her ancestors both for her family as well as many neighbors and friends who also sought her help. Eldon was born March 27, 1911 in Los Angeles, California, first child of Marshall A. McEntire and Amy Taylor McEntire. In 1913 the family moved to Harrisville, Utah and then later to Malad, Idaho where he spent most of his childhood. A move in 1928 took his family to Brigham City where he attended Box Elder High School and first met the Skidmore family. A year later the family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where Eldon completed high school at the L.D.S. College in 1929. He worked his way through the University of Utah and graduated with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering in 1934. Eldon was first employed by the Salt Lake City Water Department in June of 1934 and enjoyed a long career there, working his way up to become chief engineer in 1952. Some of the water resources and systems now enjoyed by the City of Salt Lake were planned and overseen by him. McEntire Reservoir, located at 7400 S. 2700 E. is named in his honor. During his career he solved a problem in the City Creek Canyon pipeline by inventing machines that were able to cut away inches of rock-hard lime deposits in pipes to vastly improve flow delivery performance. He received a US patent on a variable speed electric motor and was a registered professional engineer and land surveyor. During World War II he worked at the Remington Arms plant. On December 28, 1935, Eldon married Zella Skidmore in the Salt Lake Temple, ceremony by David O. McKay. In 1936, Eldon and Zella built their own home on the avenues and there raised a family of five children. They lived in that home for more than 63 years. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as an Ensign Stake Missionary, Scoutmaster and in various other callings. Later he drove the Temple Square Tour Bus for visitors who wanted to see Welfare Square. He took frequent trips to help his children. He often brought a suitcase of toys to share with grandchildren, who also loved his wonderful stories. He was a long time member of Optimist International of Salt Lake City. He shared his positive attitude towards life with everyone. He also enjoyed participating with the Sons of Utah Pioneers. His great love was fixing things on his farm in Charleston, Utah which he managed as a family partnership. He was inventive with farm machinery and water sprinkling and pumping systems. His children (and their spouses) are James Eldon McEntire {deceased} (Nancy), Mary Louise Wirthlin (LeRoy), Robert Henry McEntire (Elona), Carol Ann Penman, and Marilyn Brinton (Richard). He had 38 grandchildren and 62 great-grand-children. Of his five siblings he is survived by two sisters, Virginia Howell Beckstead, and Betty Jean (Jack) Crossley. He was preceded in death by his wife, one son, one grandchild and one great-grandchild and his sisters Mable Hilton, Maureen Murphy, and brother Marshall McEntire. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, April 20, 2002 at 12:00 noon in the Ensign 4th Ward Building, 9th Avenue and "K" Street. He served in the New England mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After graduating from BYU, he taught school at Cedar City, Utah. He served for two years in the United States Air Force. He worked in Salt Lake City, and then moved to California. He recently retired from AT&T, and moved back to Malad. He is survived by his life partner, Peter Serafin, his parents, Stuart and Faye Tubbs, one brother, Ron (Teresa) Tubbs, all of Malad; his sisters, Beverly (Paul) Howell of Nibley, Utah, Sharon (Sam) Hendricks of Salt Lake City, Joyce Mizrahi of Boulder, Colorado; several nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by a brother, Stuart Dan, a sister, Vicky Hall and two nephews. Services will be held Friday, April 19, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Malad Second Ward, 20 South 100 West. She was born April 22, 1912, in Samaria, Idaho, the daughter of Evan Jenkins and Ann Williams Martin. Ruth was reared in Samaria, Idaho, and lived over 50 years in Pocatello, Idaho. She attended beauty school in Pocatello, Idaho. She married George E. Lewis April 4, 1941, in Blackfoot, Idaho. She was a member of the LDS Church and served as visiting teacher and in the Relief Society. Ruth had a great love of music, and was a member of the Silver Chords singing group. Ruth worked as a cosmetologist in Pocatello for over 50 years, and did not retire until 1985. She loved music and enjoyed traveling, but her family was her greatest joy. Surviving are one son, Daniel (Kristine) Lewis, Roy, Utah; one daughter, Mary Lee (David) Lien, Pocatello, Idaho; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one nephew, Evan (Nancy) Meyers and his family, Sugar City, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Dan W. Martin and LaVern Martin, and one sister, Anna Martin Meyers. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 18, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Horsley Funeral Home, 132 W. 300 N., Malad, Idaho. Friends and family may call Wednesday, April 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, will be in the Malad City Cemetery. Dillon married Rilla Lythgoe in June of 1935. They were later divorced. He married Blanche Drevo on October 9, 1953. Dillon proudly served our country as an aircraft mechanic at Hill Air Force Base during World War II. He was employed as a truck driver for Swift and Company in Ogden for 23 years, and with Consolidated Freightways for 10 years. Dillon traveled over two million miles with no accidents. He was a member of the LDS church. Dillon was a very kind and gentle man with a great love for children. He will truly be missed. He is survived by three sons and one daughter; Ross (Helen) Smith, Denver, CO; Shirley Campbell, Bonner Springs, KS; Darrell (Trina) Nitz, Clinton; Robert (Lezlee) Smith, Layton; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. He is also survived by a sister, Donna Penrod of Ogden, and one brother, Norman Smith of Nevada. Dillon was preceded in death by his wife Blanche, seven brothers, two sisters, one daughter, and a grandson. He was born Dec 25, 1908 in Malad, a son of Ephraim T. and Rachel Griffiths Hawkins. He mar-ried Ethel Wanda Sasser July 30, 1930 in the Lo-gan LDS Temple. He was a high priest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had served faithfully for many years in various callings. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Eph and Ethel lived in Malad for many years, where he worked as a barber. In 1957 they moved to Murray where he worked as a correctional officer at the Utah State Prison. Eph will be remembered for his keen sense of humor and devotion to his family. He is survived by his wife, Ethel, Murray; three daughters, Orpha (Lloyd) Waldron, Pocatello, Helen Lewis, serving and LDS mission in WV, Kathy (Larry) Taylor, Sandy, UT; one son, Delon (Pat) Hawkins, Murray, UT; 24 grandchildren; 67 great-grand-children; 10 great great-grandchil-dren; one brother, Farrell (Darlene) Hawkins, Murray; and sister-in-law, Thelma Hawkins, Malad. Jones, 95, of Malad, Idaho died Wednesday, April 3, 2002 in Bethesda, Maryland. He was born July 6, 1906 in Henderson Creek, ID in the farmhouse of his parents, Joseph A. Jones and Ann Jones. On Aug 31, 1928 he married Anna Vernal Evans, also of Malad, and their marriage was later sealed in the Logan LDS Temple. During the depths of the Great Depression he entered Utah State Agricultural College in Logan, UT where he earned a Masters Degree in Bacteriology. After his graduation he joined the faculty as an Instructor in the Bacteriology Department and later completed the Ph.D. program in microbiology at Stanford University. He gradually rose to the rank of full professor and then retired as an emeritus professor in 1973. He was recognized as an outstanding teacher in the classroom and an excellent research scientist. He published numerous scientific articles in domestic and international scientific journals and received National Science grants for post-doctoral studies. He was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a high priest and served in various teaching and administrative assignments. After retiring from Utah State University he and his wife moved back to Malad, where they lived happily until his wife's death in 1990. In 2000 he moved to Potomac, MD. He is survived by one brother; four sisters-in-law; son, Sidney, and his wife, Marlene; five grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at the Benson-Horsley Funeral Home in Malad, 12 noon, Mon. July 8, 2002. Friends may call at the mortuary 10:30 a.m. until the funeral service on that day. Interment, Malad City Cemetery.

Thomas, 77, Blackfoot resident, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at the Bingham Memorial Extended Care Facility.He was born July 7, 1924 in Malad, Idaho, to Robert Lewis and Juanita Mirandi Stowe Thomas. He attended schools in Malad, graduating from Malad High School in 1942, where he participated in track and boxing. He went to Idaho State University where he earned a Bachelor's degree in 1952 and received his Master's Degree from the University of Idaho in 1957. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Eastern Mandates, Southern Philippines, and Ryukyus campaigns. On March 21, 1951, he married Karoline Ann Schiewe in Elko, NV., she preceded him in death on June 19, 1994. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint, holding the office of High Priest. Robert was active in all the communities in which he lived, he served as the Sixth District Commander in the American Legion, President of the Retired Teachers Association, he was a member of the PTA, Superintendent's Association, Silver Chords, the realtorgroup, and helped with taxes for the elderly. He was a teacher in Leadore, Valley High School in Eden, Buhl, Castleford, Jerome and Blackfoot, a principal at Groveland Elementary, superintendent at Pierce and Rockland, and coached football, basketball and track. He retired in 1981. He liked to dance, sing, and golf, and he loved to visit with people and tell stories. He is survived by four sons, Robert Dale "Bob" (Janet) Thomas of Pocatello, Id; James Grant "Jim" (Annette) Thomas of Blackfoot, ID, Jeffery Lyle "Jeff" (Kristi) of Rockland, ID; Bradley Dean "Brad" (Susan) of Sheridan, WY; four brothers, Gordon "Sam", Mont, Darryl, and Bill Thomas, all of Malad, ID; three sisters Lorraine Starkey of Nampa, ID, Norma Thomas of Malad, ID, and Nola Coates of Battle Mountain, NV; 23 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Richard Lynn and Jon Scott Thomas; and two grandchildren Kristie and Kristen Thomas. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 1, 2002, at the Hawker, Hill Funeral Chapel. The family will meet with friends for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. A private family burial service will follow in the Malad Cemetery. The family suggest that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Lupus Foundation or American Legion Stewart Hoover Post 23 in Blackfoot.
