My 17 year old son who had hernia surgery a week ago... was riding his bicycle to school when he was hit by a Chevy Tahoe Truck. He is doing well despite everything. 3. Latah & Nez Perce Counties checking in. I went to the Idaho Genealogical Society meeting held in Hayden last weekend and had a lot of fun. It was nice to get out of town to meet new people and collaborate. Kootenai County Genealogy Society did a great job! With gardening and mowing this summer, I haven't had time to do any family research, perhaps I'll find some time if the grass quits growing this month! 3. Gem & Valley Counties checking in; hope to finish grape juice this week. This weekend is the local museum's premier re-enactment event http://www.gemcountymuseum.org/  with the Idaho Civil War Volunteers & plenty of Oregon Trail living history.  Tim Goodale brought a train thru here in 1862. I'm reading vol. 8 of Holmes "Covered Wagon Women," 1862-1865. Not only does that cover the timeframe for Goodale, it also covers the timeframe for my g-grandfather's brother, who was the first in my family to come west.   Interesting post on South Fork Companion http://sfcompanion.blogspot.com/2012/09/army-pathfinder-john-c-fremont-at.html - "Perhaps a thousand emigrants had crossed Idaho before Frémont’s party explored the area." (in 1843) That blog is an interesting one to follow as he does an Idaho, "on this day in history" daily. ________________________________ From: Matthew D. My Great Grand Uncle Samuel Friend had represented Blaine County at the time but not sure what it was that he had done in those meetings. Do you think you can find out? The Idaho Vital Records people have decided to release more birth, marriage, and death records to the Idaho State Archives. We are not sure yet exactly how many records we will be getting but hope to have them available within the next couple of months. We will not be offering certified copies of those records, only providing them for genealogy research purposes. We are very excited about getting those records and anticipate a large volume of requests for those records. Which brings me to the bad news. Our volunteer who was assisting with filling that type of request has a fairly serious medical problem and most likely won’t be back. So not only are we down that one person who gave us invaluable assistance, we are anticipating an increased need for volunteer assistance. Would you please share the word with members of the Gen Society and the DRC. There is a volunteer application form available online at http://www.history.idaho.gov/sites/default/files/uploads/volunteer_form.pdf<http://www.facebook.com/l/vAQHpP0W1/www.history.idaho.gov/sites/default/files/uploads/volunteer_form.pdf> or, alternatively, people may contact me and I will get the form sent to them. 3. I've been so busy, I couldn't remember if I checked in for Idaho and Lewis Counties. If I didn't already, then here it is. If I did already, then just chalk it up to being 50 now. ha!ha! Our part of Idaho is on fire. Two big fires, one started on the Salmon River (Sheep Fire) that threatened a lot of homes at first, now is headed up the mountains to the Florence mining area. This area has not had a fire for years and has so many trees it will not be a good thing. Lots of bug kill and dead fall trees will make for good fuel and will burn fast and hot. The other fire is the Magruder fire (McGuire Complex) that is threatening the mining towns of Dixie, Elk City , Orogrande and headed into the wilderness. The people that live in Dixie are only being aloud in or out once a day. They are saying they won't get these fires out until the snow flies, so not a good situation. The smoke here in town has been horrible for a couple of weeks now, visibility is very bad and it is also reeking havoc on the asthma. The smoke smell is now working it's way inside our houses and businesses. Other than that, I am going steelhead fishing on saturday to cheer myself up. I haven't done any work on my sites, been too busy with other projects. I am working with the Id County Historical Society and also still working with the Id. County Historical Preservation Committee on lots of projects. Hope all is well with everyone.
