LOL But it's graduate school, no fat chance in that. Like these professor thinks we are awake 24/7. Thanks Penny for sharing about your great find from Idaho County courthouse. I know that Blaine county has a vault full of old records. I just hope they're still there when I get to that county someday. Well, I'm checking in myself for the month but I'll grant my holiday wishes later on. I hope everyone had a nice thanksgiving. Mine was okay until I cooked my turkey the weekend after thanksgiving day. Guess what! I nearly fried it to charcoal. My oven decided that it wasn't going to work right. After that whole weekend of inhaling burned smell in the apartment and trying out the oven again by baking a pumpkin cake and burn it too. I gave up and on Monday called school maintance to see what the problem with the oven. Well, it turned out the knob that adjustes the temp had gone out so when I set my temp at 300 it wouldn't stay there and go up to 500. Now, I wondered why my turkey and pumpkin cake was burnt. 3. Idaho and Lewis counties here. Haven't been fishing Mags - but have been hunting! My new job is keeping me sooooo busy, but hopefully in a few months I will have more play time. **I want to share some great news with you all. I just recently obtained over 250 microfilms of a bunch of old record books of Idaho County. I'm not sure if you all know this, but in the 1980's the Genealogical Society of Utah went to all the county courthouses and microfilmed all the old "big" ledger books of records, ie. taxes, marriages, mining, homesteads, probates, wills etc. The Idaho State Archives has copies of most of them, with the exception of the tax rolls. For some reason I do not know why they did not get a copy of those. The Idaho County courthouse has had these films in their basement since they were originally filmed. About 15 years ago, I was at the courthouse doing research and came across these boxes of microfilms. I had forgotten about them until this past year when I moved back home. I had been doing more research and wondered if the films were still there. Low and behold - they were still in the basement, crammed up at the top of a shelf gathering dust. I talked with some of the gals in the Assessor's and the Auditor's offices. None of them knew they were even there. Anyway, long story short. . . I asked the county commissioners to donate them to the Idaho County Genealogy Society and they said yes. I was afraid that some day they would be thrown out, as has happened with many old records. I wanted to make sure and save them, as they are a gold mine for research! So. . . some of you that research at your courthouses may want to inquire. If you have a connection there, ask them to do some looking in their storage areas, because I can guarantee if you just askif they have them, they will honestly say they don't , because they have probably never seen them. If they have them, ask them to donate them to your local genie society or if you don't have one, ask them to donate them to you as a researcher or the State Archives. Our courthouse had original and duplicate films so were happy to see the duplicates have a good home. They pointed out the fact that they would still have their paper copies, so if something ever happened to them, there would still be another form available. I have a good relationship with them and they have actually called me on a couple of occasions when they were going to shred/destroy old records, wanting to know if I would like them. I always say yes! You never know what you will find!! Friday they gave me 6 boxes of old marriage affidavits from 1898 - 1950's. I will probably spend the rest of my life indexing them. ha!ha!
