Matt, I have the stories on her as a census taker already, so that is easy. I'll go through the mining records and get some info there too. I think the hardest part will be finding any stories about her mining experiences. But I will give it my best shot. Give me about a week and I'll see what I can come up with. I believe I have a picture of her in Florence at the school. Maybe I'll run across another woman in my research. Her maiden name was Eva (sometimes found as Elva) L. Skully, she married a Canfield, then later married a Martin. I have a file on her, just have to locate it in my many many boxes of Idaho County stuff. Have a great weekend. Time for me to go fishing for the next three days! Is there anyone that lives up near Wallace, Idaho? I might need someone to go there to find materials for me on the subject I requested about women miners at the Wallace District Mining Museum. Let me know if anyone might be able to take some time to do some historical research for me. Thanks, Matt On Wed, Feb 13, 2013 at 9:19 AM, Matthew D. yes, Penny that is what I am looking for. Some primary sources and perhaps a story or two that talks about her experiences as a miner in Florence. Can you Penny find some of this stuff for me. I just need one or two mine claims and any stories about her. As a census taker, it probably a good leverage of her knowing the backwoods to find these miners that probably would have not been found otherwise. I'll do some googling around to see if I can find anything on her. Eva Skully Canfield Martin was a gold miner in Florence, Idaho for many years. I believe in the 1930's-50's. She owned several mining claims in Florence and in the Salmon River Mining District. Her cabin still stands in Florence. I haven't come across any articles about her mining but have about her being a census taker. I do have access to the Mining Records for Idaho County if you are looking for anyone there. She was one of the census takers for Idaho County for 1930 and 1940 federal census and the 1935 farmers census. In the 1940 census she was in her 60's and had to travel the back country on snow skiis. There were news articles about her from Spokane to New York. I have a request of the IDGenWeb Team! Have any of you came across documentations of women working as miners in the Idaho mining districts? When I was researching about Idaho women in the mining districts, I’ve came across only one article by the Idaho Statesman Journal, “Woman is a Mineowner. Coal and Gold Property in Blaine County” on January 12, 1911. Have you seen other documentations of a woman like this one owning or working in the mining districts? Please contact me if you have. I’m interested in putting together a research paper about this. Thanks! Matt -- *Matthew D. Friend* Conway, Arkansas Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/MatthewDFriend Twitter: @matthewdfriend

Payette County Here! Kerrie ________________________________ From: Matthew D. Friend <[email protected]> To: IDGenWeb Project <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, January 31, 2013 12:40 PM Subject: [IDGENWEB] February 2013 Roll Call Good Evening Idahoans, First off, I want to thanks for everyone checking in for the “mandatory” roll call last month. I will expect everyone to check in twice a year (January and July) while we still will have monthly roll call, however, you need to check-in at least once or twice during that period. Thanks for being a part of our IDGenWeb Team. Lately, life has been turned upside down for me. My wife and I finally moved to Russellville (two weeks ago) after she finished her last classes at UCA in December 2012. Talk about a mess in this move, nothing is working out for us, and our patience is being extended beyond our ability. And yet, it seems the hardest for me and my guide dog as we try to adjust to our new surrounding and environment. Okay, check in time for February 2013. I would like to see some of our orphan counties be taken care of by some of you if you have some time to watch them temporarily until a new coordinator wants to adopt them. Can you check out our listing on the website and see if you can help us out here? I hope this email finds all you doing well and keeping warm. Have a great month, ... oh! Have a great Valentine Day, President Day, etc. etc. etc. Matt Friend -- *Matthew D.
