He was born Aug. 17, 1908, in Mapleton to Orrin Preston Merrill and Alice May Stephenson. He was the second of seven children. He grew up in Mapleton, Downey and Preston. He went to grade school and high school in Preston. He received his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University and his master's degree from Utah State University. He married Zoe M. Morrison on Aug. 17, 1932, in the Salt Lake Temple. He worked in the education system for more than 30 years. He taught school, became a principal and was superintendent of Moore and of Jefferson County schools. He was also a professor at Ricks College and head of the education department and summer school. He was very active in all areas of his life and president of every organization he joined. He was very active in the Boy Scouts of America and president of the Teton Peaks Council. He received the Silver Beaver award for his exceptional service to youth. He was a ranger in Yellowstone National Park for several summers. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing on a good stream. He also enjoyed cultural events. He was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many callings including bishop, high councilor, and as an officiator and sealer in the Idaho Falls Temple. He and Zoe served an LDS mission in Delta Junction, Alaska. In later years he was still pleasant, kind, and considerate to everyone that worked with him. He would always say thank you and never complain. Everyone loved him and said what a special man he was. He is survived by a sister, Geraldine Jacobs of Rexburg; a son, Preston (Betty) Merrill of Logan, Utah; daughters Karole (Robert) Merrill of St. George, Utah, and Jeanne (Mark) Gehmlich of Rexburg; as well as 11 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Zoe, a daughter, Ann Merrill, and his brothers and sister. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at the Rexburg 15th Ward church. The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Sugar City Cemetery under the direction of Flamm Funeral Home.
