Newbold, 89 years old, died peacefully on Dec. 29, 2007, due to congestive heart failure at the Cache Valley Assisted Living Center in Providence, Utah. She returned to be with her loving husband, Floyd Newbold, her parents, a daughter, Dee Ann Newbold, and two sisters, Ardyth Arbon and Mavis Kirkman. Thella was born on Dec. 11, 1918, to Ettna Elijah-Gilbert and Lottie Rawlings Gilbert at their home in Fairview, Idaho. She was born during the flu epidemic and caught the flu right after she was born. When she was born she weighed around 7 lbs and when she was three months old she only weighed 5 lbs. When she was a little girl she and her sister cut out paper dolls from old catalogs and played house. She played jacks and loved to read. When she was 12 years old she learned to embroider and she did that while she was tending the cows. She has embroidered, crocheted and quilted all her life and she enjoyed that hobby a lot. She has won many blue ribbons at the Cache County Fair and the Utah State Fair for her sewing and canning. When she graduated from 8th grade at Virginia, Idaho, grade school she was the valedictorian and when she graduated from Downey High School she was salutatorian. She always has enjoyed reading, math (especially Algebra) and spelling. Studying was easy for her because she loved to learn. She met Floyd LaVern Newbold at a dance in Cambridge, Idaho. They dated for four years. They went to movies in Downey, which cost 25 cents, and lots of dances. They were sealed for time and all eternity on April 21, 1938, (which was her mother's birth date) in the Logan LDS Temple. About a month after they were married they went to town to buy a few items. They sat in the car and counted their money, which consisted of $5 and some change. But when they were in the store they could not find the money. They looked but could not find it. They had to go home and got a job picking strawberries and thinning sugar beets for $8.00 an acre. Floyd bought a small seven-acre fruit farm on Providence south bench with a $300 down payment. The farm had a small, two room house, which they lived in until 1947, when they built a new home on the property. They lived there for 65 years. They raised strawberries, raspberries, dewberries, apples, pears, peaches, grapes and cherries. They worked hard all their lives on the farm. They are the parents of three children, Ona Herring (Gordon) of River Heights, Vern Newbold (Joy) of West Jordan, and David Newbold (Lorene) of Kaysville. They have 11 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren, and mom cherished all the time she could spend with them. Mom and Dad were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mom held many positions in the church (Ward and Stake Relief Society, Primary teacher and Sunday School secretary). Mom and Dad became temple officiators at the Logan Temple in April 1983 and were released in August 1989. They loved this mission for the church. Thella is preceded in death by her loving husband, Floyd Newbold; her parents; a daughter, Dee Ann; and two sisters. Thella is survived by four sisters, Viona Bennett (Lloyd), Ina Jensen (Henry), Gwen Tripp (Reed), Norma Warth (Paul); and one brother, Ervin Gilbert (Collette). We know that you have been a great and special mom to your three children, your grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We are proud to call you mom and love you very much! Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Allen-Hall Mortuary Chapel on 34 E. Center Street, in Logan. A viewing will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services at the mortuary. Interment will be in the Providence City Cemetery.
