Martin, 88, of Nampa, passed away Monday, June 23, 2008, surrounded by family. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2008, at Alsip & Persons Funeral Chapel, 404 10th Ave. South, Nampa, ID 83651. Friends and family may meet at Alsip & Persons at 10:30 a.m. Saturday for a procession to Kohlerlawn Cemetery. Graveside services will begin at 11 a.m., with military honors by the U.S. Army. Douglas was born Oct. 16, 1919, in Preston, Idaho, to Edward and Emma (Stephens) Martin. As a child, Doug enjoyed his time living in the country and working on the family farm with his close-knit family. At Preston High School, Doug excelled in athletics and was selected for the Idaho All-State Basketball Team. Doug was in the U.S. Army for more than four years during WWII, including one and a half years on Unalaska at Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands, and was rated as a sharpshooter. With some hesitation and at the urging of three of his buddies, Doug volunte! ered with them for the paratroopers. He always smiled when telling the story that his three friends washed out, leaving him on his own. Doug was assigned to the 82nd Airborne and served in England, Germany, Belgium, and France, and recently received a certificate of gratitude from France for his service there. After honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, Doug attended the University of Idaho, graduating with a bachelor's degree in Forestry in 1950. On Dec. 2, 1945, he married Cleetis Lockwood at her family's farm in Nampa. They were a devoted couple, and Doug referred to Cleetis as the "light of his life." After graduating from college, Doug worked for two years with the State of Idaho and then for the Bureau of Land Management until he retired in 1979. He enjoyed elk and bird hunting, camping, fishing, playing pinochle (they were part of a group called the "Dirty Dozen"), and most of all spending time with his wife and their children. Doug was a member of the Elks Lodge f! or 45 years. After 58 years of marriage, Cleetis preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 2003. He is survived by his daughter Janet (Eric) Harvey of Burbank, Wash.; son Kevin (Anne) Martin of Boise; sister Jean (ODeen) Bowden of West Jordan, Utah; grandchildren Jason and Shawna Bay of Redmond, Wash.; Alicia Bay and fianc? Derek Novak of Dillon, Mont.; and Meghan Martin of Boise. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers and five sisters. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff and administration of Spring Creek Manor and to Legacy Hospice, both of Meridian. Contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Legacy Hospice, 680 S. Progress Ave., Meridian, ID, 83642. Published in the Idaho Statesman on 6/26/2008.
