She was a former resident of Riverside California. Nona was born on December 17, 1926 in Fairview Idaho to Lionel and Leona Maughan. She was the fifth of six children, one brother and four sisters. She attended school in Thornton, Idaho and graduated from High School in Logan, Utah. She met her husband, Harold Alfred Schwarting, in Logan, Utah where he was attending an officer flight training program in the US Air Force. They were married on May 20,1946 in Harrison County, Mississippi where Harold was completing additional officer training. Harold's service as an Air Force pilot meant many sacrifices, separations, and frequent moves for the family. Tours of duty were served in Mississippi, Illinois, California, Georgia, New Hampshire, France and two tours in Germany. Some of these assignments were extremely challenging particularly living in post World War II Germany. Many of the buildings had been bombed out and there was a severe shortage and rationing of food and other essentials. Being a military wife brought out Nona's ability to be independent and resourceful while her husband was away from home on many assignments. They were separated for a year when he served in the Korean War. He also served in Vietnam for a year and a half. As a member of the LDS faith, Nona became accustomed to being in isolated branches containing fewer than eight families. She served multiple roles in the branches including auxiliary organization leadership and teaching roles. Nona lived in Riverside, California from 1963 until 2000 where she established many friendships, educated her children, and embarked on a career in Real Estate, specializing in probate cases. In 2000 she moved into an apartment in the home of her son, Richard Schwarting in Orem, Utah. Nona was intelligent, inquisitive and well read. She had a wealth of knowledge and enjoyed exchanging ideas with others. Nona is survived by her three children, Kathryn Jean (Hurst) Schwarting, of Lehi, Utah; Richard Harold Schwarting, of Orem, Utah; Marc Sheldon Schwarting of Rancho Palos Verdes, California; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Thelma (Jensen) Maughan, of Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one brother, Don Maughan, and three sisters, Helen (Petereit) Maughan, Carol (Richards) Maughan, and Alta Maughan. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 24 at 1:00 p.m., in the Cascade Ward Chapel located at 481 East Center Street in Orem, Utah. There will be a viewing on Sunday, November 23rd, from 6:30 to 8 pm at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary at 495 South State Street in Orem, Utah. Interment will be by her husband's side at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside California. A graveside ceremony will be held at the time of interment.
