He was born Aug. 1, 1936, in Preston, Idaho, to Joseph Nowland and Zilla Talbot Winger, being the oldest of four children. He has many loving memories of growing up in Winder, Idaho, and hunting down through hollows with his dog, Butch. As a teenager, Larry developed his talent in voice, which has enriched us all throughout his life. He married Beverly Ransom on May 4, 1955. The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. They were married for 52 years. Larry and Beverly first made their home in West Valley City, Utah, where Larry worked at Kennecott and Hercules while earning a degree in elementary education at Brigham Young University. After receiving his degree, he moved his family back to Preston, where he was employed for more than 25 years, not only as an elementary school teacher but also as a custodian and groundskeeper. He eventually bought his father's farm in Winder, Idaho. Larry enjoyed dabbling on the farm, raising a variety of farm animals, growing a large garden, nurturing a fruit orchard and starting groves of trees. Later in life, Larry and Beverly moved back to Preston and, once again, Larry took joy in landscaping his yard. Larry was always kind and thoughtful of those around him. He served in several bishoprics and other church callings. He especially enjoyed being an umpire for Young Women's softball games. He is remembered for his beautiful tenor voice, singing as a soloist for his children and grandchildren as well as for musicals, church programs, weddings, funerals and other special occasions. His greatest joys, however, were spending time with and being actively involved in the lives of his family and, because of this, his memories will be cherished by his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, mother and siblings. He was always there for us when we needed him most. Larry is survived by his wife, Beverly; three daughters, Robyn (Reed) Blau, Melanie Hollingsworth and Laurie Jo (Mike) Earley; two sons, Todd (Georgia) and Shawn; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; his mother, Zilla Buchanan; sister, Rhonda (Sheldon) Barfus; and his brother, Edward (Marie). He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Nowland; brother, Doyle; two granddaughters, Heather and Holly Jo Hollingsworth; and three great-grandchildren, Larry Joseph Blau, LaCayden Jo and Preslee Rodriguez. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, in the Whitney 2nd Ward Chapel with Bishop Brandon Stephenson conducting. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Webb Funeral Home, 109 E. Oneida St., Preston, Idaho, and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. prior to the funeral service at the church. Interment will be in the Preston Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.webbmortuary.com. Published in the Logan Herald Journal on 7/7/2008.
