He was born December 14, 1922, in Gilmer, Texas, to Blanton Monroe and Julia Pilcher Denton. He married Ida Beth Ward on May 11, 1943. They were married for 65 years, and lived in Treasureton farming and ranching. He was greatly influenced by the devout gospel truths his Grandmother Annie Pilcher and mother taught him. He went to country schools, where he loved to learn. His school teachers were LDS missionaries from the Mountain West who were sent to East Texas to teach school during the day and proselyte in the evenings and on weekends. His teachers also taught seminary classes and were positive examples of moral values, religious life and scholarship. From early grades he was required to memorize lengthy poems and ballads. His recall of poetry enriched his life and that of family and friends up until three weeks before his death. In 1940, he graduated from high school and came to Franklin County with Guy Woodward, one of his teachers. During World War II, Malcolm served three years in the U.S. Navy with the Seabees (construction battalion) in the European Theater. There he made lifelong friends who got together and kept in touch through the years. Malcolm has been a faithful church member, working in the Sunday school, priesthood quorums and MIA. He was Scoutmaster for many years and a registered Scout for 65 years. He loved to do temple work and name extraction for the Family History Center. He was a Democrat all his life. He always had fun talking Democrat and Texas jokes and often wore ties with patriotic themes with his suit. He is survived by his wife, Ida Beth, who has been his devoted caregiver during his last years of illness; a son, Richard L. (Nancy) Denton, Bountiful, Utah; a daughter, Loma Prince, Ogden, Utah; and a son, David Denton, Treasureton; 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Annette Denton in 1948, and a son, Andrew D. (Andy) Denton in 1983, his parents, his four brothers and his sister. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 5, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the Riverdale Second Ward Chapel, with Bishop Dax Keller conducting. Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home, 109 East Oneida in Preston, and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Treasureton Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.webbmortuary.com. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
