Clara Dean passed quietly from this earth on March 8, 2008.Clara Dean was born September 5, 1922 to Charles Earl and Lois Hawkes Goaslind in Preston, ID and spent her youth there. She was active in school drama, girl's association activities and had many friends. While going to high school, she also worked at the movie theater in the small town. After graduating from high school, she attended Brigham Young University. She met her future husband, Thomas Max Smart, in the ninth grade and married him in the LDS Logan Temple on February 25, 1943, after he returned from his mission. They were devoted to each other through six decades of marriage. Their union was blessed with three children and the family lived in Idaho and Colorado before settling in Salt Lake City where Clar! a Dean worked for many years at Beehive State Bank. She was a valued employee, working as a teller supervisor, trainer, and eventually a bank officer. After retirement, Clara Dean and Tom made many friends as they spent the winters as "snow birds" in St. George, Utah. Clara Dean was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. She was known as an exceptional teacher. She and Tom served a leadership mission in the Salt Lake City area. Clara Dean was a wonderful mother and grandmother, giving unconditional love and service to her family. Many fun hours were spent going to garage sales, laughing, and doing crafts together with her beloved sister, Carol. Family and friends all cherish the memories of those years before she became ill. When the diagnosis of Alzheimer's was received, Clara Dean faced the future with grace and acceptance. She is survived by children Kathy (Ron) King, Sparks, NV; Cindy (Steve) Lewis, Taylorsville! , UT; and Michael (Karen) Smart, Boise, ID; grandchildren Matt, Amy, J on, Stephanie, Kellie, Tim, Annie, Allison, Megan, Peter, Sara, and six great-grandchildren. Her nieces and nephews will fondly remember their "Aunt Mimo". The family wishes to express gratitude to the staff of Holladay Health Care for their attentiveness to Clara Dean through her many years of affliction. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 15th at 2 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South where a visitation will be held Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. and again Saturday one hour prior to the services.
