Smith, age 99, our beloved mother, grandmother, and friend passed away on March 12, 2008 in Cedar City, Utah. Alice was born in Cleveland, Idaho, to William and Margaret Smith, on November 25, 1908. She grew up in Cleveland, and attended grade school there, then rode a horse and drove a sleigh to Thatcher, Idaho 6 miles away for a high school education. After graduating from high school she attended the University of Idaho South Branch in Pocatello, so that she could earn a teaching certificate. She was then only 17 years old. She taught school in Stockton, Idaho for 5 years and then one year in Cleveland. Needing more credits to continue teaching she came to live with her brother in Cedar City, Utah and attended the BAC. She met Wallace Smith while living in Cedar City. They were married in St. George, Utah on Jan. 30, 1932. The marriage was later solemnized in the St. George Temple where she continued to enjoy many happy hours in that holy house. She was an enthusiastic genealogist, and compiled volumes of family genealogy and family history. She was a grateful, active member of the LDS Church all of her life, serving in many callings. Alice had a keen intellect and a love of learning. She was brilliant, well read, a fantastic historian, and loved the scriptures. She was an active member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers for many years and contributed much to that organization. Cedar City was her home for 65 years, where she kept a big yard and a farmer sized vegetable garden. She loved her three children, Allison (Van) Bushnell, Wallace Kay (Bonnie) Smith, Donlee (Kenneth) Simkins. Her grandchildren found refuge in her home and her caring ways. There are now many great, and great, great grandchildren. She will be laid to rest in the Cedar City Cemetery next to her husband Wallace who passed away in 1982. Funeral services will be Monday, March 17, 2008 at 11:00 am in the 2nd and 8th Ward Chapel located at 212 West 200 South in Cedar City, Utah, with the viewing from 9:30-10:30 am. A viewing Sunday from 6:00-8:00 pm will be held on March 16, 2008 at Southern Utah Mortuary. On line condolences can be sent to www.southernutahmortuary.com.
