He was born July 19, 1929, in Jal, N.M., the son of Joseph V. and Helen Rapley Mooney. He married Betty L. Casteelon on July 28, 1950, in Ogden, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden, Utah Temple. He was always interested in the defense and preservation of our American way of life. He has always been in one branch or another of the Armed Services since he was 17 years of age. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and served as a reconnaissance car crewman in the First Calvary Division. He was in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of the occupation of Japan. In 1949, he went from the Army into continuous service in the National Guard. He served as motor sergeant and operations sergeant. He was then assigned as detachment sergeant for the 148th Special Forces Detachment where he instructed guerrilla warfare organization and tactics, retiring as 1st Sergeant. He was junior vice commander, post commander and region commander of the VFW. He was also employed at Hill Air Force Base from 1952 to 1984. He became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1953, and was involved with the scouting program. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Preston, Idaho; three sons and one daughter, Michael Rice, Clearfield, Utah; Scott Mooney, Preston; Wayne (Lisa) Mooney, Lincoln, Mont.; Kathy Gregory, Preston; by nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Lamar, by his parents and by two sisters. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at the Aultorest Cemetery, 836 36th St., Ogden, Utah. Friends may call Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home, 109 E. Oneida, Preston.
