She was born October 25, 2001, in Riverdale, Idaho, the daughter of Hyrum Wray and Christine Hilabar Larsen Smith. In her own words, Irene said, “She was born and raised in Riverdale, Idaho, just a wide spot in a dusty road. She attended Riverdale Grade School. Irene rode to school behind her big brother, Wendell, on a horse they called Fly. For her secondary education she traveled to Preston by way of a makeshift school bus. From a little country school Irene brought much wisdom and understanding to her educational career. She began teaching in Riverdale after receiving her teaching certificate from the USAC in Logan, Utah. After seven years in Riverdale, she taught fourth and fifth grades in Preston for five years, then moved to Idaho Falls where she finished her teaching career after 45 satisfying years of teaching. “She received a bachelor of science in education from USAC in 1946 and a master of science in secondary education from the same institution in 1949. She also attended classes in education at Albion Normal School, the University of Idaho, BYU, and California State Teachers College. “She has served as an officer in many of the educational organizations of which she has been a member, including president of Idaho Falls Education Association, chairman of the State Teachers Welfare Committee, vice president of the State Classroom Teachers Association, president of Sixth District IEA, president of State Classroom Teachers Association, president of Idaho Education Association, chairman of State Public Relations Committee, Northwest Regional Director, SEA Department of Classroom Teachers. “The spring of 1977 Irene and her sister, Cleone, moved back to spend their retirement together in the beautifully remodeled family home in Riverdale. They were so happy to be home again among old friends and family. She was a lifetime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and after retiring, thoroughly enjoyed all of the Single Adult activities.” She is survived by two brothers, Wendell H. (Wavel) Smith and Eliot Wray (LaRue) Smith; and a sister, Cleone Kinney, all of Riverdale, Idaho; 9 nieces and 4 nephews. She was preceded in death by parents; a brother, Jean J. Smith; and a sister, Radia Hull. Funeral services will be Monday, October 29, 2001, in the Riverdale Ward Chapel at 12 noon with Bishop Sam Smith conducting. Friends may call at the ward chapel Monday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Riverdale Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Webb Funeral Home.
