Alonzo was born June 22, 1916, to Alonzo H. and Nettie Mendenhall Handy in Whitney, Idaho. He was married to Dorothy E. Hansen on May 14, 1937, in Logan, and they were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple. His wife preceded him in death on Oct. 17, 2000. He missed her very much and looked forward to being with her again. Alonzo was a construction carpenter by trade for most of his life. Earlier he worked for the railroad, a grocery store, and did farm work and sheep herding. He was an active and faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as bishop of the Preston 3rd Ward, among other callings. Alonzo and Dorothy made their home in Preston for 30 years and then moved to Ogden in 1967. They were members of the Ogden 43rd/Malan's Peak Ward. Alonzo was a strong and hardy man, but was also known for his tenderness, patience and kindness. He expressed gratitude for everything that was done for him and did not complain. His family always knew he loved them for he expressed it frequently both in words and service. He is survived by two sons and their families, Al (Carolyn) Handy, Mesquite, Nev., Roger (Annette) Handy, Brigham City; seven grandchildren, Allen (Kristen) Handy, Kristina Handy, Barbara (Brian) Dawson, Diana, Christopher, Jessica, and Vanessa Handy; eight great-grandchildren, Courtney, Indianna, Sophia, and Natasha Handy, and Rachel, Janae, Emma, and Jace Dawson. He is also survived by one sister, Ruby Cunningham, West Valley City, and four sisters-in-law, Jean Fancher, Casper, Wyo., Helen Ritter, Saratoga, Calif., Shirley Kenney, Ogden, and Carol Jensen, Clearfield. The family expresses gratitude for those at Hospice for Utah and other friends and caregivers who provided service and comfort in his last two years. Alonzo left an enduring legacy for his family in his example of a hard-working, gentle, and honorable man. Although we who are left are saddened by our loss, we rejoice in his reunion with his wife, parents, brothers Herman, Harley, Don, sister Delca, granddaughter Melissa, and other friends and family members who have gone on before him. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at 1 p.m., at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., Ogden.
