John Mangum, Jr., passed away Sunday, June 16, 2002, at the age of 42. He was born June 15, 1960, in Ely, Nev., to John Theodore Mangum and Joan Montgomery. He served in the Montana mission for the LDS Church. On his return, symptoms of Cockaynes Syndrome, a genetic disorder, began to emerge and he battled bravely the rest of his life. His brother, Jody Lee Mangum, 45, passed away May 1 of this year of the same degenerative disease. John is survived by his father, Ted (Dodey) Mangum of Logan; Joan Montgomery of Franklin, Idaho; two sisters, Shelley Howard (children, Joshua, Jessica and Jayda) of Pleasant Grove, and Jacque (Scott) Sanderson of Roswell, Ga. John possessed a celestial spirit, a keen sense of humor and a valiant heart. He has resided at the Sunshine Terrace for the last two and a half years where he received great care. While he was still active, John engaged in many sports, from bowling to archery to rafting to dirt biking. He also loved monster truck rallies and all animals. He enjoyed working and spent several years in the kitchen at Carousel Square on the USU campus. Previously, he had worked in the Airport Hilton kitchen in Salt Lake City. John’s life exemplified courage, hope and faith and he will be greatly missed by all who enjoyed knowing and loving him. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at noon in the Cliffside Second Ward Chapel, 1350 Eastridge Dr., Logan, with Bishop Boyd Rowley conducting. Friends may call Wednesday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Franklin, Idaho Cemetery. Arrangements are by Webb Funeral Home, Preston.
