He spent his early years in the farming community of Preston, Idaho. His family relocated to Ogden when he was 12. He graduated from Ogden High School in 1947, graduated from Weber State College with an Associate of Science degree in 1949, graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees in 1953. He later completed his doctorate requirements from the University of Utah in Education Administration in 1958. He taught in the Davis, and Weber school districts and worked in education administration during most of his career in Utah. He moved to Long Beach, California where he took a position as Director of Education at Long Beach City College. He loved working with people and in the education profession, touching thousands of students during his thirty-two years as an educator. He often said, "teaching never seemed like work because it is something I just enjoy." He loved his neighbors and they took care of him like he was their father. He was an active member of the LDS church and he held several church positions during his lifetime. He often said, "it is not your position in life but what you can do for those close to you that counts." In his younger years he was an outstanding athlete, lettering in football, track and boxing at Ogden High School and Utah State University. He married Norma Wright in 1950 and later divorced. He married Sally Bunderson in 1971 and later divorced. He is survived by his loving wife of 11 years Joyce Coburn. They were sealed in September of 1999 in the Bountiful LDS Temple. He is also survived by two sisters Donna (Alton) Winger, Connie (Carl) Maughn, six children, Mitchel (Rena), Salt Lake City; Jon (Marilyn), Layton; James (Mary), South Ogden; Nancy (Todd) Howard, Riverdale; Nathan (Malinda) Roy; Rachael, Bentonville, AR; and niece Dixie Burrell. He is also survived by six stepchildren, who he loved very dearly and considered his children, Vickie (Rick) Voss, Salt Lake City; Stephen (Ruth) Oliverson, Alpine; Mike (June) Oliverson, Salt Lake City; Pam (Rex) Campbell, Salt Lake City; Jeff (LeeAnn) Oliverson, Salt Lake City; Kim (Annette) Oliverson, Salt Lake City; and 39 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 4, at 11 a.m. at Leavitt"s Mortuary, 836 36th St., Ogden, where friends may call Sunday, March 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Washington Heights Memorial Park.
