Newton "Newt" Hartshorn, passed away on Oct. 10, 2007, at the Idaho State Veterans' Hospital in Boise, Idaho. He was born of noble parents Arthur W. and Vady (Vadie) Henderson Hartshorn, on June 17, 1920, in Preston, Idaho. He married Eva Lorraine Kershaw on Valentine's Day. They had four children together. Newt moved to Logan, Utah at the age of eight where he attended Benson Elementary School. He was outstanding on the swim team at Logan Junior High. He was featured in the Herald Journal Sports page for his excellent swan dive. As a sophomore in the Logan Grizzly competition, he won the flag pole climbing to the top and beat the junior and senior class in that event. For the lowly sophomore class he was competitive! Newt proudly served his country during W.W.II in the Navy where he served at the Treasure Island base in the medical corps. He always loved the outdoors, horses, and rural life and never lost his love for Preston, his Hart and Nash relatives. In 1938 he graduated from Preston High School. He loved swimming, skating, and especially football. He played center, delighting that they beat Logan High. His sisters at Logan were not as jubilant as Newt was for the Preston win. They were happy because he played energetically and with competitive excitement. Newt was president of the Art Club and was very talented in drawing murals. He enjoyed rodeos and loved to show off on a bucking horse. Newt is loved by his large Hart family. He is survived by his children, Jill Hart Smith, Josie (Mike) Anderson, Jeni Le Summers; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; family members Adina (100 years old) Evadyna, Rhea, Arlette, Jed, Elna, Ada Kae, Bret, and Jocelyn. There will be rejoicing beyond the veil by others who enjoyed his antics and free spirit. He was preceded in death by his parents; his dear Aunt Ada; and others, Dutch, Halo, Mark, Reed, Sabina, Joel, Newell, Wendell, Neal, Hermoine, and Micky Hart who died at the age of 101 in April of 2007. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, at 1p.m. in the Preston South Stake Center with Bishop Alan Holt conducting. Friends may call Wednesday from 12-12:45 p.m. at the church prior the services. Interment will be in the Preston Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Webb Funeral Home in Preston, Idaho.
