Joella was born to Mary Catherine (Kitty) and Darmel Whittaker on June 11, 1917. Joella attended local schools in Dayton, Ohio, and graduated as Valedictorian of both the elementary school and Jeffersonville High School. She went on to graduate from Ohio State University with honors and received the bachelor of arts degree in education in 1937. While at The Ohio State University, she met and eventually married Samuel Isa in 1941. This marriage brought about the birth of a baby girl, Mary Hannah. Joella and Samuel taught in schools in Ohio, Colorado and California and eventually in Oregon where they remained for the remainder of their lives. Samuel passed away in 1955 from cancer. Joella met Wendell Checketts through a mutual friend. At the time, Wendell was living in Seattle and would drive to Portland each weekend to court this really wonderful lady. Joella went on to earn her master's degree in librarianship and then taught at the three high schools in North Clackamas School District, retiring in 1981. Joella and Wendell have had a wonderful life together. They loved traveling to Canada, Mexico and nearly every state in the USA. They spent part of Oregon's wet winters at Desert Hot Springs and the adjacent areas of Yuma, Mexico, and San Diego. Joella and Wendell have been active in two Winnebago Clubs, which they have thoroughly enjoyed. They both loved square dancing and were members of the Crazy 8 Square Dance Club. They also looked forward each year to visits with Joella's family in Ohio and Wendell's family in Idaho. Religion was also an important part of their lives in both the LDS and First Presbyterian churches. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Wendell Checketts; and her daughter, Mary Douglas of Burien, Wash. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007, in the Preston 1st/5th/8th Ward chapel, 213 S. 200 East in Preston, Idaho. Friends may call from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.
