Hugh was born on December 3, 1922, to Niels Wilford and Tora Virgia Wilde Hansen in Mink Creek. He attended schools in Glencoe and Mink Creek, serving as student body president his junior year. He completed his high school education in Preston, graduating in 1941. Hugh worked on the farm with his father and also worked for his Grandmother Hansen in Bear Hollow. At the height of World War II, Hugh enlisted in the Marine Corps. After basic training, he was assigned to the Fourth Marine Air Wing and shipped to the South Pacific. He served on the island of Peleliu, in the Palau group of the Western Caroline Islands. When the war finally ended, Hugh came home to Mink Creek and remained a very patriotic man, as he had been willing to sacrifice his life for his country. In 1947, Hugh was called to serve in the Western States Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When he returned, he served in the bishopric of the Glencoe Ward. It occurred to him that he soon needed to find a wife. He met Bonnie Lue Neeley at a church dance and after a whirlwind courtship they were married on March 7, 1951, in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. They made their home in Mink Creek on his farm. Hugh was a school bus driver and worked various construction jobs to supplement the farm. He began working for Utah Power and Light in 1963, and retired after 20 years. Throughout his life, he loved his farm and his animals. Hugh's life was one characterized by service to his family, his church, and his fellow men. He held numerous leadership positions in the LDS Church which, in turn, provided a way for him to touch many lives. At age 70, Hugh was called to serve in the Singapore Mission with his sweet wife, Bonnie. They strengthened the Saints in Malaysia and India and spread the Savior's love. After their return, they served together as ordinance workers in the Logan LDS Temple. Hugh is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bonnie Lue; and his six children, Sandra (Earl) Kemp, Farmington, Utah, Sidney Hugh (Geraldine) Hansen, Richmond, Utah, Roxane (Wesley) Beutler, Dayton, Idaho, Patricia (Dirk) Bowles, Fairview, Idaho, Timothy Lowell (Kelly) Hansen, New Meadows, Idaho, and Wesley Neil (Heather) Hansen, Ogden, Utah; 26 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; four siblings, Vinora Dursteler, Ane Ora Nielson, John C. Hansen, all of Preston, Idaho, and Adria Mecham of Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Mardene Sparrow. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 21, 2007, at noon in the Mink Creek LDS Chapel, with Bishop Terry Westerberg conducting. Friends may call Sunday, May 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home, 109 East Oneida, in Preston and Monday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the church in Mink Creek. Interment will be in the Mink Creek Cemetery. We will miss Dad's twinkling eyes, bright smiles, and his hugs and kisses. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
