Fuhriman, 86, passed away early Monday morning, May 1, 2007, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born Jan. 18, 1921, to Effa Amelia Jones and Andrew E. Fuhriman in Franklin, Idaho. He was the youngest of eight children. He grew up in the rural community of Franklin, and graduated from Preston High School. After graduation, he joined the Army and was stationed in the Philippine Islands. He was taken prisoner, survived the infamous Bataan Death March, and spent the entire time period of World War II as a prisoner of war. After the end of the war and back home in Southeastern Idaho, he met and married Ilene Brown from Preston on May 28, 1947. Their marriage was later sealed in the Logan, Utah Temple. Royce and Ilene made Preston their lifelong home. As newlyweds, Royce worked for McCune Motors. A few years later, he went into business with Rulon Owen as co-owners of Hansen Glass and Paint. Royce loved Preston. He was active in the Rotary Club, served as president of the Preston Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the Elks Lodge. He also served on the Selective Service Board of the American Legion for many years. Royce's favorite hobby was golfing. He was a charter member of the Preston Golf and Country Club, and was on the golf board of directors. Royce and Ilene loved to travel. They would take off and later call to say we're in Canada, or on the Oregon Coast, or wherever their fancy guided them. The highlight of their travels was a trip in 1981, to the Philippine Islands to honor the American and Philippine soldiers on the 40th anniversary of World War II. They and the other survivors of the Pacific war front were honored in a celebration held in the Presidential Palace and hosted by then-President Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos. His story also appeared later in the book, "Courage in a Season of War," by Paul H. Kelley and Lin Johnson. Royce was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His favorite church calling was that of nursery leader, a position he held for 17 years. His theory was that if the Savior should ever walk in, He would go to the Primary first to make sure his little ones were happy. Royce's stories from the primary nursery brought laughter and tears to his family and ward members for years. Royce and Ilene are the parents of four children, Sally Ann (Bruce) Keller of Smithfield, Utah, David Andrew (DeAnne) Fuhriman of West Linn, Oregon, Patricia (Robert) Eckman of West Jordan, Utah, and Diane Fuhriman of Brigham City, Utah. He leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ilene in October 2003, and by three brothers and four sisters. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2007, at 1 p.m. in the Preston Eighth Ward Chapel, 213 S. 200 E., Preston, with Bishop Randy Wakley conducting. Friends may call Friday, May 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home, 109 E. Oneida, Preston, and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church. Military rites and interment will be in the Preston Cemetery. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
