Id Obits Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Id/FranklinObits/256 Surname: Long, Hobbs ------------------------- The Idaho State Journal 12-16-2000 PRESTON - Rufus Wendell Long, age 90, beloved father, brother and grandfather, passed away from this earthly existence to join his sweetheart in their heavenly home on December 14, 2000. Wendell was born May 2, 1910, to Rufus C. and Lettie Long in Mapleton, Idaho. He was raised on the family farm in Mapleton. He graduated from Franklin High School and attended Utah State University. Wendell married Afton Hobbs on April 4, 1934, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. They bought a farm and started their family in Mapleton. Wendell wore out several Caterpillars doing bulldozing for the canal companies and neighbors. He spent many hours custom-cutting grain for neighbors besides doing his own farm work. He worked several campaigns at the sugar factory in Lewiston, Utah, and Whitney. He was employed by Thiokol Corporation in Logan, Utah, from which he retired in 1974. He spent long hours working to provide for his family. Wendell served in many positions in the LDS Church. He was ward clerk for 10 years, first counselor in the bishopric, high priest group leader, a member of the YMMIA presidency, secretary for the stake Aaronic Priesthood Committee, Sunday school teacher, and served in many stake board positions. Wendell is survived by his children, EuGene Wendell, Summit, Utah, Roy C. (Barbara), Thousand Oaks, Calif., S. Dee (LeeAnn), Kearns, Utah, W. Clyne (Ann), North Logan, Utah, LaRue (DeVere) Burbank, Evelyn (Dennis) Dockstader, Gaylene (Kevin) Stone and Wendy (Doyle) Sears, all of Cub River, Idaho; 41 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; brothers, J. Reed, Preston; Verl P., St. Anthony, Idaho; sisters, Vonda Odekirk, Huntsville, Utah; Myrle Pierce, Salt Lake City, Utah; Leola Ash, Logan, Utah, and Rayma Jepsen, Preston. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two grandchildren, his brother, Bryce, and sister, Thora Snarr. Funeral services are under the direction of Webb Funeral Home, and will be held at the Mapleton Ward Chapel on Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at noon. Viewings will be held Sunday, Dec. 17, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and at the Mapleton Ward church Monday morning from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Interment in the Mapleton Cemetery. Wendell and Afton were one in life through 66 years of marriage, and could not be separated by death.
