She was born in Preston, Idaho, on June 24, 1908, the daughter of Willard and Annabel Cowley Larson. Jessie learned many of life's important lessons growing up in a family with three brothers and no sisters. The need for self-preservation taught her the value of sharing, working together, developing courage and resilience. Her delightful sense of humor and ability to laugh endeared her to many. Jessie and her mother were very close. Not only were they mother and daughter, but also friends and allies. After finishing high school in Preston, she attended and graduated with honors from Utah State Agricultural College (now Utah State University). Jessie taught elementary school for several years and then decided to further her education. She spent time in New York and also in Europe studying are and then returned to Utah, where she accepted a teaching position in the art department at USU. This proved to be challenging and meaningful. A sabbatical leave provided her with the opportunity to study at the University of Washington and the Fine Arts Center at Colorado Springs. It was there that she received a Master of Fine Arts degree in oil painting. After 33 years of teaching, Jessie retired from USU. She had helped hundreds of young people develop their artistic ability and gain a love and appreciation for art. Jessie was a dedicated teacher and talented artist. She received numerous awards. Her love of art and beauty was not limited to painting, sculpting, weaving and ceramics. She appreciated all forms of beauty and creative expression. Her love of nature, from the most glorious breath-taking sunset to the tiniest delicate blossom, was evident in all she did. Through the years, Jessie traveled to many parts of the world, near and far. She was able to experience first hand the magnificent creations of God and man. Jessie was a faithful, valiant member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many capacities and spent countless hours in Temple service. Her life was devoted to serving the Lord, her fellow men and her family. She was deeply loved and will be missed by her family, her many friends and associates. She is survived by her brother, Mark H. (Alvaretta) Larson, San Diego, Calif.; three nephews, Jeffrey (Patty) Larson, Arcata, Calif., Paul (Valerie) Larson, Lake Jackson, Texas, Blaine (Ann) Larson, Lovettsville, Va.; three nieces, Karin (Scott) Retzak, San Diego, Calif., Greta Larson, Lakeside, Calif., Joan Herd, Logan, Utah, and numerous cousins, grand nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the Logan 18th Ward Chapel, 502 E. 300 North with Bishop Grant Collier conducting. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church on Monday. Burial will be in the Logan Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Allen-Hall Mortuary.
