She was born June 29, 1909, in Randolph, Utah, to Andrew Gray and Klea Grant Muir. Venna was the second of eight children. Venna spent her early years living on a ranch in Randolph. The family then moved to Kemmerer, Wyoming, when she was 12 years old. She graduated from high school while living in Kemmerer. By this time in her life Venna had become an excellent seamstress. She made her own clothes and loved sewing for her younger sister. Her first job was making hats in a milliner shop. She had a peculiar laugh and always said she was glad to be remembered by a laugh and not a frown. The family moved in 1927 to Ogden, Utah, where she would meet her future husband in 1928 at a dance. Venna loved to dance. Venna married Willard Davis on April 18, 1929. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City Temple. Two children were born to this union, Keith and Elaine. During the depression years Venna accompanied her husband as they went on the road repairing sewing machines. They eventually moved to Sacramento, California, where Venna continued working as a seamstress. She enjoyed activity in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in the Primary and Sunday School organizations. After another move to Ogden, Utah, they made their final move to the Salt Lake Valley. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1947. Venna continued to sew dresses to provide income for her family. One evening she went to the Rainbow Rendezvous, where she would meet her new sweetheart, Harold Smart. They were married on September 14, 1951. Harold, a widower, also had two children, Nola and Wayne, and so these two families were combined into one loving group. Harold and Venna were later sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple. Venna discovered a love of genealogy and spent countless hours doing research on both family lines. She was also involved in the church’s name extraction program, which she really enjoyed. In 1991 Venna and Harold moved to Clifton, Idaho, to be nearer to all four children, who had by then made Idaho their homes. Venna continued her work in genealogy and joined the Harold B. Lee Camp of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. In October 1985 her sweetheart Harold died. Seven years later, she made another move to Victor, Idaho, to live by her son, Keith. Her next and final move, would be to Pocatello, Idaho, in the fall of 1997. She spent her final years at the Highland Hills Assisted Care Facility, where she made many special friends and became a favorite with the staff. The family is very grateful to them for their loving care. Many thanks also to two special granddaughters, Cathie and Casie, for caring for grandma these past years. Venna leaves behind a posterity numbering 86, who loved her and learned countless things from the examples she left behind. She is survived by two sons and two daughters, Keith ( Claudia) Davis, Victor, Idaho; Elaine (Cornelius) Hofman, Pocatello, Idaho; Nola (Gary) Garner and Wayne (Carolyn) Smart, Clifton, Idaho; 18 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great- grandchildren.
