She was born March 16, 1929 in Preston, Idaho, the daughter of Edward and Serena Bergquist. Eleise was the 8th of 11 children. She graduated from high school in Preston and attended Brigham Young University where she met her husband, Mearle Smith. They were married March 5, 1952 in the Logan Temple. They will be celebrating their 50th anniversary next month. Eleise is the mother of eight children: Jeff Smith (Mary), Stephanie Smith, Brian Smith (Jan), Marilynn Howard (Tom), Julie Smith, Craig Smith (Suzanne), Leslie Smith, and Gary Smith (Sara). She is survived by 21 grandchildren and by her brothers and sister: Jesse Bergquist, Leon Bergquist (Lucille), Ralph Bergquist (Cathy), Keith Bergquist (Phyllis), June Gailey (Gordon), Max Bergquist (Clarice), and Gordon Bergquist (Kathi). Her early married years were devoted to raising her children and serving in the Church. She was an avid gardener and cook, and shared her talents with everyone she met. She also loved to travel and meet new people. Eleise loved the Gospel. Her life was centered around her family and friends. She always thought of others first and touched every life she met. Eleise was a very loving and caring person and will be missed by everyone who knew her. She worked as a librarian for many years for Lehi City and Sego Lily Elementary. She was an active member of the LDS Church and served two LDS missions with her husband. The first in the Provo-Utah Mission and the second in the Scotland-Edinburgh Mission. She was an ordinance worker at the Provo and Mount Timpanogos Temples. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, one brother, and her daughter Julie Ann. Services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002 at the Lehi East Stake Center (1200 E. 900 No.) at 11:30 a.m. A viewing will be held on Friday, Feb. 1, 2002 at the Wing Mortuary, 118 E. Main, Lehi, from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday morning at the Church from 10-11 a.m. Interment will be in the Lehi City Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, the Harmony Hospice, Dr. Dickinson, Dr. Frame and their colleagues.
