    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Bell, Stephenson, Bennett Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Eg.2ADE/399 Message Board Post: The Herald Journal, 01/24/02 PRESTON, Idaho — Cassie Stephenson Bell, 99, died in Orem, Utah, on Jan. 21, 2002, of congestive heart failure. She was born in Mapleton, Idaho, on June 16, 1902, to Harris Archibald and Sophronia Bennett Stephenson. She was a lifetime resident of the Preston area. Her parents had filed a homestead claim in Cub River Canyon prior to 1900 and Cassie was born in their first home, a small log house typical of that “pioneer” period. She was the third child and first daughter in a very close-knit family which expanded to include 13 children. When Cassie was 15 years old, her parents moved to Preston principally because they wanted their children to go to Oneida Stake Academy. She graduated from high school and then took a summer course at what is now Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho, to qualify for a primary school teaching certificate. Many years later, she graduated with a BS degree from Utah State University in Logan, Utah. She and Asael E. Bell were married May 16, 1923, in the Logan LDS Temple. They had a three-day honeymoon in Salt Lake City, Utah, before Asael left on a two-year LDS Mission to Germany. Cassie taught school in Mink Creek, Idaho, while he was away. After Asael’s return in 1925, they both taught for two years in a two-room log school near McCammon, Idaho. Cassie then retired to raise their family and did not return to teaching until she was “drafted” during World War II, retiring finally about 1962. All her life, she remained very active in the church and community. She was a wonderful mother to her three children and their families, a surrogate mother for her younger siblings when their mother died at age 51 in 1930, and was a very caring neighbor and friend. She and Asael were named as “Outstanding Citizens” of Preston when they were in their eighties. She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Beula and Edwin Hinckley, Provo, Utah; Evan and Lois Bell, Ontario, Canada; and Max and Jean Bell, Chicago, Illinois and Pacific Grove, California; and by grandchildren, Ann, Scott, Craig, Kevin, Erin, Diane and Colleen; and by 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Janice (Maynard) Andreason, Layton, Utah; Iris Erickson, North Ogden, Utah; and by one brother, Allen (Florine) Stephenson, Boise, Idaho. Preceding her in death were her husband, Asael, her parents, brothers, Guy, Loran, Kenneth, Carvel and Harry, and sisters, RaMona, Alta, Sophronia and Ada. Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, in the Preston North Stake Center, 310 N. State Street, with Brother Blayne Rounds conducting. Friends may call Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home, 109 E. Oneida, Preston, and Monday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the stake center. Burial will be in the Preston Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Larsen-Sant Library in Preston.
