William was born December 25, 1933, to William DeLacy and Julia LaVon (Jepsen) Baird Jr., in Mink Creek, Idaho. He was raised and educated in the Mink Creek area, and attended Preston High School. He married Beverly Spackman, and together they had three children. They were later divorced. He married Francine Porter, and together they had six children. During his lifetime, Bill worked as a logger for Bear Lumber and as a heavy equipment operator for LaGrand Johnson. Bill belonged to the American Legion and VFW. He served one term as commander of the Preston chapter. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, traveling and loved fast horses, faster women and smooth whiskey. In his younger years he was known as "Wild Billy B." He is survived by his children, William (Tom) Thomas Baird, Dayton, Idaho, Mertello (Tel) Porter Baird, Preston, Idaho, Lillian (LaVon) Ellis, Evanston, Wyo., Lettie Marie Baird, Preston, Idaho, Dorothy (Kay) Lewis, Pocatello, Idaho, Janna Lee Hugill, Sharon, Idaho, William Jepsen Baird Jr., Seattle, Wash., Shelly Harris, Seattle, Wash., Paul J. Baird, Preston, Idaho; a sister, Jean Jepsen, Salt Lake City, Utah; brothers, Jerry J. Baird, Preston, Idaho, Earl J. Baird, Dayton, Idaho, Ross J. Baird, Pocatello, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Francine Porter, brothers, Bernell and Thomas Jepsen Baird, sisters, Doris and Rochelle Baird. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 18, 2000, at the Mink Creek LDS Ward Chapel in Mink Creek, Idaho. The viewing will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, October 17, 2000, at Webb Funeral Home, 109 E. Oneida, Preston, Idaho, and one hour prior to the services at the church on Wednesday. Interment will follow at the Mink Creek Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. Fourth Ave., Pocatello.
