He was born September 27, 1930, in Lewiston, Utah, to George Floyd and Ireta Hodges Helmandollar. Val grew up in Lewiston, Utah, Ogden, Utah, Oxford, Idaho, and graduated from Westside High School, Clifton, Idaho in 1948. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Air Force form 1950-1954. Val was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad from the time he was 17 until his medical retirement in 1984. He married Edith Crookston on February 18, 1955, in the Logan, Utah, LDS. Temple. They lived in Ogden, Utah, Downey, Idaho, and settled in Pocatello in June of 1959, where they had since resided. Val was an avid golfer and had two holes in one at the Highland Golf Course. He was a high priest in the Alameda LDS Sixth Ward, serving as Sunday school president, home teacher and enjoyed the youth of the ward. He and Edith served as temple workers in the Idaho Falls Temple for 10 years. He loved and enjoyed his children and grandchildren, and will be missed by each. Val is survived by his wife, Edith, of Pocatello; two sons, Boyd Val (Darla) Helmandollar, Green River, Wyoming, and Mark C. (Denise) Helmandollar, Inkom, Idaho; four daughters, Karen (Gary) Carter, Kaysville, Utah, Linda (Eric) Elle, Pocatello, Debra Jo (Terry) Harding, Green River, Wyoming, and Heidi Ann Helmandollar, Pocatello; 14 grandchildren and Tad, Paula, Megan and Julia; one great-grandson; two bothers, Dean (Julia) Helmandollar, Chubbuck and Boyce (Betty) Helmandollar, Omaha, Nebraska; one sister, Barbara (Randy) Hurwitz, Scottsdale, Arizona. Val was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Gene and Morris, and a sister, Lorna. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 18, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Alameda LDS Stake Center, corner of Alameda and Jefferson, with Bishop Jim McKee of the Alameda Sixth Ward conducting. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening, Sept. 17 at the Henderson-Cornelison Funeral Home, 431 North 15th Ave., Pocatello, and also at the stake center on Wednesday morning from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Interment will be in the Oxford Cemetery at 3:30 p.m., with military graveside rites by the Preston National Guard.
