She was born on March 29, 1908, at Preston, Idaho, where she resided until the last five years of her life. Her parents were Theodore Daniel Alder and Alice Ellen Paull. She married Joseph Adolph Nuffer on July 20, 1927, at the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. He passed away in 1985. Gretta went by her second name as long as she could remember, rather than her first name, Susan. She was the sixth child out of seven children in her family. All of her brothers and sisters and their spouses have preceded her in death. Her brothers and sisters in order of age were: Waneita (Neita) Ruby Swainston (Nathan), Melvin Paull Alder (Emma Christella), George Edwin Alder (Florence Viola), Monona Alice Andrews (Alvin), Lewis Charles Alder (Norine), and Verna Althea Kidd (Garland). She will have a grand reunion with her family in paradise. As a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, she had always been proud of her pioneer heritage, dating back to the Nauvoo period. She was the instructor in her local chapter and enjoyed giving the history of the pioneers. Gretta was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as Relief Society president in the Preston First Ward. She had the responsibility of raising money for the ward Relief Society budget. Many bazaars and fund-raising dinners were organized to provide funds for a large ward of 1,000 members. She was also a Young Women’s president and Primary president in her ward. Gretta enjoyed being a homemaker. She took this job very seriously by canning the garden produce. The Franklin County Cannery was used extensively by Gretta in canning vegetables, fruits, meats, soups, etc. She always had a year supply of food on hand and enough to spare for her daughter’s family in Cedar City. There never was a problem for Gretta to prepare a meal for unannounced guests, as her basement was thoroughly stocked with food. She graduated from the Preston High School. In high school she loved to give readings for various clubs and organizations. She enjoyed being in plays and road shows, and loved to dance and was a popular girl with the boys. Although she didn’t continue her formal education beyond high school, she was always interested in learning new homemaking skills and attending BYU Education Week, held each summer in Preston. She did volunteer work at the Franklin County Fair and loved to enter her sweet pickles in competition at the fair. Those family members surviving Gretta are two children, a son, Donald G. Cummings (Norma), residing in Las Vegas, Nevada, and a daughter, Sharon Nuffer Olsen (Larry), residing in Cedar City, Utah. She has nine grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Preston, Idaho, in the Preston Fifth Ward, located at 213 South Second East, on Saturday, September 21 at 11 a.m. Family and friends are invited to the viewing on Friday evening, Sept. 20 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Webb Funeral Home, and on Saturday, 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Preston Fifth Ward Church.
