She was born in Bancroft, Idaho, on Oct. 24, 1924, the seventh child of 11 born to Wilford and Albena Bodily. Edith spent her childhood and adolescence in Preston, graduating from Preston High School in 1942. Following graduation she worked in Salt Lake City and then in New York City, as secretary at Columbia Broadcasting Systems. She returned to school at Brigham Young University in 1945. She became reacquainted with Earl Dean Kern at BYU and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on Aug. 27, 1947. Together they lived in American Fork, Utah, San Francisco, Palo Alto, Calif., Bethel Park, Pa., Pittsburgh, Pa., and returned to Preston after retirement from U.S. Steel in 1983. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in the Young Women’s organization (Palo Alto) and as a district and stake Relief Society president. (Pittsburgh). She enjoyed visiting and strengthening members throughout the missionfield of Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio and West Virginia. She loved the symphony and the different ethnic cultures of Pittsburgh and New York City but always felt strong ties to her original hometown. In traveling back and forth across the country, she visited every state in the union except two. During the last 19 years she spent the winter months in sunny Tucson, Ariz., returning each spring to prepare for the arrival of vacationing children, grandchildren and friends eager to enjoy the beautiful memorable summers of Cache Valley. Edith is survived by her husband, Earl Dean Kern, Preston; four children, Sharon Taylor (Michael), Momence, Ill., Karl B. Kern (Martha), Tucson, Ariz., Scott B. Kern, Preston, and Traci Cline (Jeffery), Maple Valley, Wash. She is survived by 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Keith Bodily, (Ruth), Preston, and three sisters, Donna Nielsen, Emmett, Idaho, Mildred McCarthy, Maui, Hawaii, and Helen Jensen (Bryce), Fairview, Idaho. Services will take place Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, in the Preston North Stake Center, 310 N. State St., at noon with Bishop Steven Fuller conducting. Friends may call at Webb Funeral Home on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the North Stake Center on Tuesday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery.
