Nelson, 72, died Wednesday, August 3, 2000, at the home of her son, Bob Nelson. She had been living there for the past six months due to ill health. She was born Oct. 31, 1927, in Preston, Idaho, the oldest child of Alvin Alonzo Cahoon and Thora Cafferty. Her family moved to Thatcher, Idaho, for a time, then returned to Preston. While growing up, she was always near her extended family and learned the importance of families staying close and helping each other. She loved to learn, and school was a treat for her. Reading was always a favorite activity. Her education was not all formal as she interrupted her schooling in the middle of her senior year to help tend her younger brother and sisters. Erma learned from her experiences and learned to think and reason and apply her knowledge. After retirement, she still was taking college and institute classes. In 1942 the family moved to Soda Springs, Idaho She took a job at the theater selling tickets and candy and later learned to run the projector. During this time she was introduced to Charles Robert Nelson. He never missed a show. They were married November 10, 1945, in Soda Springs. Their marriage was solemnized later in the Idaho Falls Temple. Erma and Charles loved to garden and grew much of their own food. When the family was young, they were often all in the garden working together. Harvest time was also a time for the family to learn to work together She always had flower gardens and would raise geraniums all year long indoors. While her children were still young, she started nurses' training and obtained her license. She worked as a nurse at St. Anthony's Hospital and at Bannock Geratrics Center for several years. She was always reading and learning more about the nursing profession. Her nursing skills were complemented by her compassion toward those she served. She loved genealogy and spent many hours doing extraction work for the LDS Church and teaching genealogy classes. She also served in the Primary, Young Women's and Relief Society organizations of the church. She also loved and served as the secretary and historian for many years in the DUP group.
