She was born April 27, 1915, in Elmo, Emery County, Utah, the fourth child of Julia A. Sanderson and Samuel N. Alger. She married Kenneth P. Child on December 9, 1940, in the Manti Temple. She served two missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Iris is fondly remembered for compassionate service rendered as a registered nurse, touching numerous lives. Upon the death of her husband in November of 1963, she returned to school and earned a bachelor's degree in Library Science from Utah State University. She then worked as the librarian at West Side High School until she retired. She was active in the LDS Church throughout her life and served in many positions in the Primary and Relief Society organizations. She loved genealogy and spent many hours researching her ancestors and compiling histories, as well as serving as the ward family history consultant and in the extraction program. She was an active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She is survived by one sister, Zola Larson, Fairview, Idaho; seven children, Mark (Liz) Child, Layton, Utah; Ellis (Carol) Child, Riverdale, Utah; Joel Child, Shelley, Idaho; Erla Fay (Kent) Fryer, River Heights, Utah; Marjorie (Barry) Crowther, Provo, Utah; Janet (Mark) Torgerson, Sunset, Utah; Robert (Karen) Child, Preston; 24 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four brothers and one grandson. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. in the Whitney Second Ward Chapel with Bishop Greg Griffeth conducting. Friends may call Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home, 109 E. Oneida, Preston, and Thursday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at 3:00 p.m. in the Clinton, Utah Cemetery.
