He was born July 4, 1916, in Minneapolis, Minn., the son of Ernest Myron and Bella Haagenson Schafer. He married Ora M. Winn on July 4, 1979, in Preston, Idaho. He spent his adult years in the military until his retirement. He served three years in the South Pacific and was a pilot in World War II with the Air Force and he later served in the Navy at sea on the Saratoga. He is survived by his wife, Ora, of Preston; by a step-son, Dwayne H. Winn, Boise, Idaho; by two step-daughters, Nancy (Mark) Tingey, Rexburg, Idaho, and Cindy Kirkbride, Preston, Idaho; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at Webb Funeral Home, 109 E. Oneida, Preston, with Bishop Kenneth Balls conducting. Friends may call from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial and military rites will be held in the Preston Cemetery.
