He was born December 22, 1905, in Preston, Idaho, the son of Niels Christian Carlsen and Marie Christine Sorensen, who were Danish immigrants. He married Annie Sophia Larson on February 20, 1931, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. They lived in Pocatello for the 69 years of their marriage. George's service in the LDS Church has been varied. He served a mission in Denmark from 1928-1930, and two stake missions. He was a member of the original Pocatello Stake Prayer Circle, Bishop of the Ninth Ward, and served in various capacities in the Pocatello West Stake and ward priesthood. He was the high priest secretary for 25 years. He was a devoted home teacher, and for many years was the teacher of the gospel doctrine class. He also spent many years doing genealogical research at the stake level, and for the family. He served a machinist apprenticeship for the railroad from 1922-1926, when it was known as the Oregon Short Line. In 1941, he spent six months in training in Washington, D.C., for a job with the Naval Ordnance Plant, and served there in a supervisory capacity until the plant was deactivated. He remained as supervisory caretaker until the plant was occupied by Thiokol Chemical. Leaving Thiokol, he worked as a carpenter during construction of the Pocatello West Stake Center. He also operated an 80-acre farm northwest of the city. He had been interested in the settlement of the community, and local politics. He was a member and past president of the Machinist Labor Union. He is survived by his son, Gary H. (Barbara), of Pocatello; daughters, Cenia (Richard) Parsons of Orem, Utah, Marsha Carlsen of Marysville, Washington, and Ka Jeen (Stan) Barlow of Ithaca, New York; 23 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Annie Larson Carlsen, his parents, seven brothers, four sisters, his son, John, daughters, Georgann and Rea, and three grandchildren, Ann Marie Carlsen, Lynn Parsons and Sandra Garrett. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, November 27, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the Pocatello West LDS 52nd Ward, corner of Hawthorne and Quinn Roads, with Bishop John Redd officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday evening, Nov. 26, in the Henderson-Cornelison Funeral Home, 431 N. 15th Ave., Pocatello, and from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Monday morning at the church. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Pocatello, Idaho.
