He was born June 16, 1926, at Preston, Idaho, the son of Vernon Herd and Ethel Mickelson Mendenhall. Claude was raised and educated in Thatcher, moving to Soda Springs in 1975. Claude married Beulah Walton June 23, 1944, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple; they were later divorced. He married Ruth Passey Larson February 15, 1975. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. He had served in the Cleveland Ward bishopric, as ward financial clerk and in the Sunday school presidency. Claude was a mechanic, store merchant; he owned and operated Mendenhall Oil in Thatcher and Grace for over 30 years before retiring. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1945 to 1946. He was a member of the American Legion. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, ice skating and dancing. In later years, reading. In spite of all his challenges, he maintained his sense of humor. Claude is survived by his wife, Ruth Mendenhall, of Soda Springs; three sons and three daughters, Brian and Vivien Mendenhall, Grace, Idaho, Vernon Kay and Ann Mendenhall, St. George, Utah, Brett Larsen, Hardin, Mont., Peggy and Richard Owens, Preston, Idaho, Julie and Kevin Bitton, Grace, Idaho, and Shauna Manhart, Provo, Utah. Also surviving are 28 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Don, and two sisters, Vernona Garbett and Duchesne Clark. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, March 5, at noon at the Grace LDS Stake Center. Friends may call on Sunday evening, March 4, at the Sims Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. and on Monday at the Grace Stake Center from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. prior to services. Burial will be in the Lago Cemetery, with military graveside services by the American Legion. Family suggests donations be made to the Caribou Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in Soda Springs.
