He was born May 17, 1929, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Joseph Russell and Margaret Major LeClere Childers. He was the eldest of four siblings. He married Doris Titaua Blakelock on Oct. 28, 1955, in the Mesa, Ariz., LDS Temple. Joseph graduated in 1947 from Gardena High School in California. After graduation, he attended Cal-Poly Tech at San Luis Obispo, Calif. In June of 1948, Joseph and best friend Vic Roberts enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. After four years of service he received an honorable discharge with the rank of staff sergeant. While serving in the Air Force, Joe was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After his discharge, Joseph served a 2 1/2 year mission for the LDS Church on the South Pacific Island of Tahiti, where he also met his future bride Doris. Joseph was a loving husband and father. He loved the Lord with all his heart and showed that through his service to his family, friends, and church. He was a great missionary and loved the Tahitian people. He was called to serve with his wife and family as mission president of the French Polynesian Mission from 1972-75. From 1983-87 he and his wife were called again and returned to Tahiti to serve as the first temple president and matron of the New Papeete, Tahiti LDS Temple. He served in many capacities in the church as teacher in many organization, bishop of the Flagstaff, Ariz., 2nd Ward, Scout Master, branch president and worker in the MTC, counselor in the stake presidency BYU student wards, bishoprics two times, high counciman, temple sealer at the Provo LDS Temple, and ward mission leader in the Riverdale 2nd Ward. He is survived by his wife, Doris, of 51 years; his children, Raquel (Steven) Smith of Thatcher, Idaho, Joseph (Christie) Childers of Preston, Idaho, Colette (David) Spratling of Adams, Ore., Gisele Rodgers of Phoenix, Ariz., 26 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Joe is also survived by two sisters, Dottie Scott of Phoenix, Ariz., and Linda (Bob) Portzer of Henderson, Nev.; and one brother, Randy Jenski of Phoenix, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph R. Childers, Margaret Childers Jenski and Chet Jenski; daughter-in-law, Alisa Westover Childers; and a grandson, Robert Lynn Spratling. Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, March 23, in the Riverdale 2nd Ward chapel. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Webb Funeral Home, 109 E. Oneida, in Preston and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the church in Riverdale. Interment will be in the Riverdale Cemetery. Published in the Logan Herald Journal from 3/21/2007 - 3/27/2007.
