He was born in Riverdale, Idaho on December 22, 1928 to Oren Mecham and Pearl Christine Christensen Packer. He graduated from Preston High school where he was a member of the boxing team. He spent two years as a medic in the Army, serving on the front lines in Korea, where he served his country well, and saved many lives. After returning from the Army he went to work at Hill Air Force Base as an aircraft mechanic, retiring after 38 years. He married Marilyn Lewis on April 5, 1951. They were blessed with eight sons. They were later divorced. After the divorce he started going to the LDS single dances. There he met the love of his life. He asked Donna Ann Price Kearsley to dance, after that they danced three times a week for many years. They were married on December 24, 1986. They were later sealed together in the Ogden Temple. From this marriage LaVon gained three daughters whom he loved very much. LaVon loved working in his yard and garden. He loved watching his flowers grow and bloom. He planted several peach trees, simply by planting the pitts of peaches. We picked peaches off those trees for several years. He was always raking or hoeing something. He loved taxidermy and mounted many animals and birds, and deer antlers for family members. LaVon was a High Priest in the LDS Church where he loved being a home teacher. LaVon is survived by his loving wife Donna and eights sons, Paul (Denise) Packer, Dale (Gayla) Packer, Mark Packer, Les Packer, Greg (Sue) Packer, Kelly Packer, Scott (Angie) Packer, Jim (Wendy) Packer, daughters, Kathy (Shawn) Rosenbaum, Linda (Owen) Stockton, JoAnn (Mike) Anderson, 32 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, soon three more will join our growing family. He is also survived by two sisters, Ivene Rodeback, Flora (LaMar) Belnap, one brother, Kenneth Packer and many nieces and nephews. LaVon was preceded in death by his parents, Oren and Pearl Packer and sister, Margie packer. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends and family may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist's Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
