He was born Aug. 17, 1926, at Franklin, Idaho, to Wilford Stokes and Ella Nora Wixom Stokes. He attended schools in Franklin and graduated from Preston High School. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a corporal, during which time he married Evelyn House. They were later divorced. After his honorable discharge from the Army Air Corps, he started his career with United Air Lines in 1952 as a baggage handler and soon was promoted to mechanic. During this time, he continued his flying lessons. He was promoted to the cockpit in 1955, finishing his career as a captain of the DC-10 airliner. On Dec. 10, 2002, he married Martha Ann Scherr in Idaho Falls. He has also lived in Sunnyvale, Calif., Seattle, Wash., and Jerome, Idaho. He enjoyed ham radio, cars, photography and organized the Sunnyvale, Calif., symphony orchestra, where he was first chair violin for many years. Survivors include his wife, Martha Scherr of Ammon, Idaho; daughter, Pauline (John) Robinson of Menlo Park, Calif.; son, Robert Edward (Ruby) Stokes of Waitsburg, Wash.; daughter, Virginia Jimenez of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter, Suzanne Stokes of West Jordan, Utah; daughter, Marilyn (Chris) Taylor of Meridian, Idaho; son, Samuel William (Elaine) Stokes of Sparks, Nev.; foster son, Jeremiah Lee of Cibicue, Ariz.; sister, Phyllis (Henry) Clarke of Sandy, Utah; brother, Joseph (Carol) Stokes of Roy, Utah; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Lyman, Merl and Paul. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge, in Idaho Falls, with Joseph Stokes officiating. Military honors will be performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Team. The family will visit with friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and for one hour prior to the service Tuesday, both at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Franklin Cemetery.
