Nampa. John was born Nov. 8, 1911, in Whitney, Idaho, the fifth of six children born to Robert McClellen and Wealthy Virtue Dalley Hull. His early childhood was spent in Whitney. The death of his father at the age of four left his mother the responsibility of taking care of her six children. At the age of nine, the family moved to Logan and it was here that John finished his high school and college education, graduating from Utah State University with a degree in geology in 1934. While in college, John played football a sport in which he excelled both in high school and college. He was chosen for the advanced ROTC program which resulted in him beginning his military career. His senior year in college, John married Phyllis Lewis on Nov. 28, 1933. Following graduation he worked with the U.S. Coast of Geodetic Survey, working and living in a tent for seven months throughout the Southwest. He then got a job with the Soil Erosion Services in Pullman, Wash., and was appointed as Camp Eng! ineer for The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp of 200 men in Pocatello, Idaho. In 1953, he left government services and went to work as a field-man for Amalgamated Sugar Company. He worked there for 23 years retiring in 1976. After transferring to Idaho i! n 1947, John built the brick home on Washington Street and raised his family there. All of the land beyond Ash Street was pasture. He was a resident of Caldwell for the last 60 years. After Phyllis died of cancer in 1980, John married Alice Riches. He and Alice sold the acreage behind the Washington Street house and built a new home on Walnut Street in 1991. They loved to travel and John continued to garden until the last year of his life. He and Alice have had a wonderful 26 years of marriage. John was always interested in things that were happening in his community and the state. Fisher, 84, died quietly at the Legacy House of Logan Utah on February 4 2007 with his wife at his side. Elden, son of Albert Lee and Selma Matilda Olson Fisher, was born December 3, 1922, in the picturesque northern Cache Valley farming community of Oxford, Idaho (20 miles northwest of Preston) - at the base of Oxford Peak. Elden has four older siblings - brothers, Albert, Robert, Allen, and sister, LaRue; and five younger siblings - brothers, Leon, Claire, Douglas, James, and sister, Selma Elaine. This large family comprised the working force for the Albert Lee family farm, where milking cows and putting up hay were routine responsibilities. As a teenager attending Downey High School, Elden starred on the basketball team and, to his father's delight, was also on the school boxing team. Not seeing his future in farming, Elden ventured off to survey a rail line in Alaska before attempting to enlist in the Army Air Force in 1943. Due to an irregular heartbeat he was rejected for service until he jumped through hoops to be accepted. He served as a navigational trainer until his honorable discharge in October 1946. Prior to his discharge, Elden met and married Jean Louise Gillen in the Dutch Reformed Church of Bloomingburg, New York, on July 21, 1946. In November 1946 and against his new in-laws' hopes, Elden drove his wife back to Idaho in a 1939 Hudson, where he continued his education at Utah State University. Elden was a whiz with the slide rule, logarithms and math in general. He graduated with a master's degree in civil engineering in 1950. Jean was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in March 1951, and their marriage was sealed for eternity in the Idaho Falls Temple on March 26, 1952. Elden moved an enlarging family from Logan to Blackfoot, Idaho, then to Idaho Falls, Idaho, North Hollywood, Calif., Ames, Iowa, Winterpark, Fla., Brea, Calif., and then back to Oxford. In each of these locations, Elden served faithfully in church callings as a branch president, stake Young Men's president and counselor in the stake presidency. As a young man, Elden enjoyed fly fishing, even taking the time to tie his own flies. Later, church and work responsibilities limited his time to fish. He worked for the Ralph M. Parsons Company and retired from there in 1990. Since then he had spent time mastering four-strand branded rugs, upholstering furniture, building a home in Oxford next to the one in which he was born, engineering and spearheading projects for his wife. Elden was always busy, with more than one project going at a time. All those who knew him will remember his as a good and great man. Elden is survived by his wife Jean; his seven children, Brenda (Bob) Hawkes, Jeffry (Suzanne) Fisher, Casey (Angela) Fisher, Ellen (Baird) McNaught, Audrey (Jon) Tanke, Jessie (Steven) Iverson, and Dale (Nicole) Fisher; 44 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; brothers, Claire and James Fisher; and sisters, LaRue Johnson and Elaine Allen. He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 10, 2007, at noon in the Clifton Second Ward Chapel, 170 West First North, with Bishop Wayne Smart conducting. Friends may call Friday, Feb. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home, 109 East Oneida in Preston and Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the church in Clifton. Surnames: Smith, Andrus, Humphrey Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.idaho.counties.franklin/2006/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Logan Herald Journal, 01/26/07 RICHMOND - On Jan. 23, 2007, Thomas Earl Smith of Richmond left this earthly existence for a much better place to rest from his labors, due to the consequences of a long, hard life. He has suffered greatly from emphysema. He was the oldest son of Thomas LaRoy and Leona Andrus Smith, born Nov. 17, 1924, in Dayton, Idaho. Through the tough Depression years his family moved around to find work. He lived in Dayton and Weston, Idaho, Moapa, Nev. and then back to Smithfield, Lewiston and finally to Richmond, Utah, in 1940. He acquired his avid hunting skills just to put food on the table. He loved the outdoors and took pride in the fact that he had hunted every opening day of the deer hunt up Nebo Canyon since he was a young boy except two years while away in the military. He graduated from Lewiston Jr. High and North Cache High School. In June of 1943, Earl was drafted into the Air Force. After basic training at Shepherd Field, Texas, he was assigned to Camp Lee, Va., where he graduated from Cook and Baker School. From there he was stationed in Tampa, Fla., as a cook in a large mess hall. While in Tampa his life was changed forever when he had the good fortune of meeting his southern belle, Kathryn Ann Humphrey. They were married there Oct. 1, 1944. Upon his discharge from the service in May of 1946, Earl and his new bride returned to Richmond and set up house. He attended Utah State Agricultural College for two years before deciding that what he enjoyed most was not done from a desk. So he left college and served a four-year carpentry apprenticeship. This is the trade he enjoyed and followed, with just a couple short detours when he worked at Sego Milk and at USU as the boiler room operator. He has had his hand in building numerous homes, churches and other structures around Northern Utah as well as passing on his knowledge and skill to others who continue to help dreams come true. On April 30, 1959, Earl and Kathryn were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple. For many years, Earl has been a faithful home teacher as well as an elder's quorum president, high councilman, Sunday School president and twice served as ward executive secretary. Earl has always been an avid outdoorsman who enjoys fishing and hunting. Following his military service he was a crack marksman. His brothers said that when hunting with Earl, if you wanted a shot at a deer, you better take it before he took a shot! In recent years, he was able to still spend time in the hills and on the lakes with grandsons and great-grandsons. His granddaughters and great-granddaughters are the beneficiaries of his skill with wood as they enjoy his handmade cupboards, log cabins and cradles. Earl is survived by his wife of 62 years, Kathryn; five children, Jack and Margo Smith of Ogden, Kathy Bravo of Grandview, Idaho, Les and Nita Smith of Richmond, Ann and Joe Allred of Centerville, and Marie and Allen Lundgreen of Richmond; 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Vernal Smith of Richmond. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lon and Joe Smith; and sisters, Edith Sorenson, Lucy Clausing and Hilma Jonas. Our great thanks and admiration are extended to Dr. Agnes Szpunar for her kind, dedicated and competent service to our parents as well as to the Legacy Hospice and the Home Health Care Staff for such professional and tender care. Services will be held at noon Saturday, Jan. 27, in the City Creek Ward chapel, 150 S. 100 East, Richmond, Utah. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church in Richmond and also from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Interment and military rites will be in the Richmond Cemetery. Arrangements are by Webb Funeral Home of Preston. Published in the Logan Herald Journal on 1/26/2007.
