He graduated from Eastern Oregon College before serving an LDS mission to Johannesburg, South Africa. He graduated with honors from the University of Utah in 1953, with a degree in journalism. On May 17, 1979, he married Eloise Hansen Chandler, from Pocatello, Idaho, and raised their blended family of nine children. As the two families joined together the word "step" was never a consideration. Wayne and Eloise moved to Draper, Utah in 1997, and shortly thereafter served an LDS mission to Alabama. Their love of missionary work is reflected in all nine of their children having served full-time missions - a work that continues with their grandchildren. Throughout his life, Wayne was passionate about community unity and growth. He served as committee chairman or member of numerous city, county and state boards and committees, including mayor of Preston. He received the Alumnus Achievement Award from the University of Utah, Department of Communications; Master Editor and Publisher Award from the Utah Press Association, Centennial Achievement Recognition from the State of Idaho. His family fondly recalls the abundant stories of his life experiences and adventures, including many interviews with dignitaries and political figures. Wayne established a legacy of love and a strong testimony of the gospel. An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, he was a compassionate and optimistic leader, and a gifted teacher. He served twice as bishop as well as other ward and stake leadership assignments, and recently as the gospel doctrine instructor. He was honored to receive the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America. His greatest source of joy was his family. He made every member of the family feel valued and loved. He also loved singing and cooking. He would often be found singing "When It's Round-up Time in Texas" while rocking a grandchild to sleep. The family will miss his zeal for life. During the last two-and-ahalf years Wayne and Eloise lovingly cared for her ailing parents, an opportunity they both loved and cherished. The children would like to thank Mom for her love and devotion and for the great joy she brought to their father. He was the second-oldest of eight children: Keith, Clarence, Maurice (Reese), Erma, Burdene (Bud), Dorothy, Geraldine and Sarah Jane (Sally). He was raised in Preston, graduating from Preston High School in 1940. After graduation he entered the United States Coast Guard, serving during World War II for 41/2 years. One night, while walking with some buddies from the Coast Guard on the pier of Coney Island they heard someone calling for help. Clarence said that someone had better go in to help. His buddies agreed, laughed and pushed him in. This is how Clarence became a hero, even though it was reluctantly. He returned to Preston after the war where he met Velda Johnson at the Persiana Dance Hall. They were married in April 1946. Together they had 11 beautiful children, four of whom preceded him in death. Clarence worked at the Preston City Cemetery, Kennicott Copper and held va! rious construction jobs to support his family. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, which was one of the reasons that he wanted to raise his family in Preston. One of the family's favorite stories of Clarence's hunting proficiencies was his duck hunting adventure on the West Cache Canal. As it was, his favorite method of hunting was from the road. He would drive up and down the road looking in the canal for ducks. The thrill of the hunt got the better of him and as he was driving over a bridge he was not paying close enough attention and his '55 Chevy Belair went over the side and into the water, shocking him and scaring whatever ducks might have been around! Clarence passed away July 24, 2007. He is survived in death by his wife, Velda; his children, Greg, Brad, Christy, LouAnn, Todd, Rick and Sherri. He has 28 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. He was buried in the Preston Cemetery. Published in the Logan Herald Journal from 8/2/2007 - 8/12/2007. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
