While growing up, she was always near her extended family and learned the importance of families staying close and helping each other. She loved to learn, and school was a treat for her. Reading was always a favorite activity. Her education was not all formal as she interrupted her schooling in the middle of her senior year to help tend her younger brother and sisters. Erma learned from her experiences and learned to think and reason and apply her knowledge. After retirement, she still was taking college and institute classes. While her children were still young, she started nurses' training and obtained her license. She worked as a nurse at St. Anthony's Hospital and at Bannock Geratrics Center for several years. She was always reading and learning more about the nursing profession. Her nursing skills were complemented by her compassion toward those she served. She loved genealogy and spent many hours doing extraction work for the LDS Church and teaching genealogy classes.
