Surnames: Simpson, Lohman Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Eg.2ADE/463 Message Board Post: The Salt Lake Tribune, Friday, April 19, 2002 Lovingly known as "Ma" to family and friends, Charlene L. Simpson died on April 16, 2002 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Born in Preston, Idaho on August 29, 1917, she was raised in Logan, Utah, the devoted youngest daughter of Curly and Ivy Lohman. Her parents, sister Audrey and brother Bill affectionately called her "Muggins." All preceded her in death, as did her gentle, loving husband and best friend, Robert "Daws" Simpson, "Pa." "Ma and Pa" met and fell in love while attending their alma mater, Utah State. Sitting by Daws' side for 50 years, Charlene too became a unique combination of an Aggie and Utah fan. Charlene and Daws also loved traveling with good friends and sunny days spent playing golf in Utah and in Mesa, Arizona where they lived during cold Utah winters. Ma and Pa were devoted to each other and their love extended with ease to family and friends. Their love and respect for each other continues to provide a strong foundation for the loving relationships enjoyed by our entire family. Ma and Pa loved the home they built together on Beacon Drive. Our family was so proud of Ma and the talent she had for decorating a home by adding the special touches that made it "feel like Ma...cared about." This flair for putting things together extended to the marvelous, creative meals she enjoyed preparing for family and friends. In fact, Ma was one of her own biggest fans. She loved her own spaghetti and curry and she wasn't the least bit shy saying how tasty both were. Even when eating alone, she always garnished the plate, making everything look and taste delicious. Ma's stylish outfits and her beautiful gray hair always had the same wonderful attention to detail as her home and meals. She was a classy woman who was years ahead of her time, working as one of the first women to sell real estate in Utah and then as the Director of Volunteers for St. Marks Hospital for 25 years. She was an independent, spunky woman who taught us a lot about attitude and resiliency by her willingness to go with the flow and make life without Pa the very best that she could. She had a keen sense of humor, could sometimes be naughty, said what she thought but Ma was also a great listener and advisor...she will be missed. Ma is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Penny and Sands Brooke, Susan and Brent Cameron; grandchildren and their spouses, Amie and Craig, Jen and B.K., Ben and Mel and Lauren; great-grandchildren and the on-going joy of her life, Samantha, Cameron and Brynli, sister-in-law Phyllis, nieces, nephews and many dear friends who we all consider family. Charlene's family sends their love and thanks to those good friends, many she enjoyed playing bridge with, some who lived in Arizona, some in Texas, the staff and friends of Cordia for making her last years so enjoyable, her doctors and the therapists and staff of Cordia, Heritage and St. Joseph's for the caring way they made the end of her life more comfortable. Funeral services will be at 2:00, Saturday, April 20th in the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 3401 Highland Dr., where family and friends may visit on Saturday from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. prior to services. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. Contributions in Charlene's memory: University of Utah, College of Nursing's Service-Learning Program, 10 S. 2000 E. , Salt Lake City, Utah 84112.

Surnames: Baird Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Eg.2ADE/193.1 Message Board Post: I am the fellow that is listed as "William Jepsen Baird, Jr." That's a sentimental gesture that Bill (William Jepsen Baird) put forward in his declining years. I was born, baptised and christened as "William J Baird" (no middle name, no middle initial). It was never very comforting that I had a brother ALSO named William (William Thomas Baird, aka "Tommy"), and even more exacerbated by the fact that it was too clear to me growing up that this man, who never denied me, was in fact NOT my father. I took to changing the stand-alone "J" in my name when I was fifteen to "Justin". While I've never amended Social Security records, it appears on sufficient public documents to give the name force (Mortgages, credit cards, marriage and divorce certificates, etc.), and beginning at age 18 begin to prefer being called by that name "Justin". Often, due to legal requirements, I will alternatively be "William Justin Baird" or "W. Justin Baird". I have, however, never been known in any way as William Jepsen Baird, Jr. until Papa Bill began to sense the end of his life was near. Some time before his death I had a DNA test run on both of us to assure that my fears was either correct or misplaced. It became clear through the results that there was only a .05% chance of his being my father, and with that news, he finally shared his views on that. His discretion and chivalry, no matter what any others had ever said of him, was respectful and appropriate. His admission when I requested it was welcomed and honored. I loved this man who I had a tenous and odd and often distant relationship with. He was never my father, except in the eyes of the law. He was never my Dad. But he'll always remain my Papa Bill. - Justin Baird (William Justin Baird, but never Wm Jepsen Baird, Jr.)
