He was born Oct. 5, 1927, at Swijndrecht, South Holland, to Leendert and Pieternella Slotboom Vermaas. He graduated from International High School in Oakland, Calif., and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army where, after basic training, he was sent to the Pacific Theater. During this time he served with the military police. He later worked for the Bear Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Idaho State Police at the Inkom, Idaho. and Alpine, Wyo., ports of entry. He married Marie Berrey on Oct. 16, 1948, in Evanston, Wyo. They were later sealed in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple on Feb. 14, 1951. Bill was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He had many wonderful friends. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings, including officiating in the Logan Temple with his sweetheart, Marie. Bill is survived by one son, William Leonard (Hanna); two daughters, Mary (Clare) Beck and Kristen (Clay) Ellis; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, and two sons, Robert Craig and Michael John. Funeral services will be Friday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. in the Montpelier Third Ward Chapel, where friends may call that morning from 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. The interment will be in the Montpelier Cemetery, with services under the direction of Matthews Mortuary.
