Reed was born April 11, 1929, in Dingle, Idaho, to Henry Ray and Arvilla Nowland Bird. He was the fourth of five children. Reed went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad in 1946, at the age of 17. He continued to work for them for 42 years. He met Flora Lewis at the Paris Café, where she was a waitress. They married for time and all eternity in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple on May 1, 1958. This union was blessed with three children, LaRae, Bryan and Shirlene. Even though the railroad career took him away from his family, he kept his home in Dingle, where he had a small ranch. He had a love of life and a love for people, especially his family and grandkids, who he loved to tease. He also enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing and the outdoors. One of the things he enjoyed most was attending his grandchildren's many activities and programs. He and Flora loved to travel in their RV, and spent the last 11 winters in Arizona. Reed was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, and served in many capacities, including Sunday school president, financial clerk and a calling to do endowments in the temple. Reed is survived by his wife, Flora Lewis Bird; three children, LaRae (the late Byron) Romrell of Montpelier, Idaho, Bryan Bird of Declo, Idaho, and Shirlene (Paul) Larsen of Brigham City, Utah; one sister, Edith (Lyman) Bunn of Paris, Idaho; one brother, Jerry (the late Colleen) Bird of Montpelier; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Venna, one brother, Walter, a son-inlaw, Bryron Romrell, and a grandson, Austin Tyrell Bird. Funeral services will be Thursday, Dec. 8, at noon in the Dingle LDS Ward Chapel, where friends may call that morning from 10 until 11:45 a.m. The interment will be in the Dingle Cemetery, with services under the direction of Matthews Mortuary of Montpelier.
