He was born July 21, 1925, to Wilford Earl and Ruby Lillian (Cutler) Chatterton in Preston, Idaho. They moved to Soda Springs, where their only son attended local schools. He was an excellent athlete, participating in football, basketball and track, receiving letters in all. He was a member of the 1943 State Championship basketball squad at Soda Springs High School. Later that same year he graduated from high school and joined the U.S. Navy. He served as a storekeeper with the Seabees from 1943, until he received an honorable discharge in 1946. After attending the University of Idaho for a semester, Sheldon followed in his father's footsteps by joining the Idaho Transportation Department. In 1955, he married Joyce Whitaker of Montpelier, Idaho. In 1956, they moved to Pocatello and made their home there. He and Joyce had two children, Kathy and Steve. Chat enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting and following his son's sports activities. Health issues forced him to retire from the ITD after 27 years of service. He spent his last years traveling to visit his family and walking at the mall. He enjoyed his walking friends, and only a stroke forced him to give that up. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Chatterton, daughter, Kathy Mraz and a son, Steven Chatterton, all of Pocatello; two grandchildren, Jennifer (Brandon) Collins, Lugoff, S.C., and Matthew Steven Mraz, Pocatello. He was preceded in death by his parents and two half-brothers. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 27, 2005, at Colonial Funeral Chapel, 2005 S. Fourth Ave., with Bishop Bart Reed officiating. The viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, August 26 at the funeral home and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service on Saturday Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Soda Springs, with military rites provided by the Soda Springs Veterans Honor Guard.
