Matthews, age 83, passed away March 21, 2007 in Cedar City. He was born October 8, 1923, the first child of seven to Eva Hymas Matthews and Jesse Richard Matthews in Liberty, Bear Lake County, Idaho, where he attended elementary school and worked on a farm with a Matthews family sheep operation. He graduated from Fielding High School in Paris, Idaho at the time World War II began. He won a scholarship to the University of Idaho at Moscow and attended there one year before being drafted in the service for the US Air Corp as a radio operator on a B-24 bomber and served in the European War Area. He married Florence Eleanor Campbell in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on September 26, 1945. They have three children; Dee Ann O'Brien (Charles F.) Of Claremont, California, Jeanne Hunt of Cedar City, Drew Matthews (Sandra) of Syracuse, Utah. They also have 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one guardian grandchild. After the war ended, he attended Utah State Agriculture College in Logan where he obtained a bachelor's and later a masters degree in Agricultural Science. Upon graduation he was county agent in Castle Dale, Emery County, Utah. After several years there he went to Branch Agricultural College in Cedar City to work for the Utah State Agricultural College Animal Research Station and to teach animal husbandry classes at B.A.C. He retired from his joint contract with USU and SUSU (SUU) in 1989 after 39 years. >From 1965 to 1968 he served on assignments from Utah State University and USAID in Boliva, South America, for work with animal husbandry. Also in 1986 to 1988 he served in Ecuador, South America on USAID animal husbandry projects. He judged many livestock shows in Chicago, Denver, California, Oregon, Washington, Utah and other states. He enjoyed his work with the Cedar Livestock Association, the Annual Southwest Livestock Show and exhibitors he met. He served on the board for the Valley View Medical Center from 1978 to 1983. He was a member of Rotary, Sons of the Pioneers, American Legion, SUU Block and Bridle Club, and Wool Growers. He enjoyed the friendships he made in service organizations and with everyone he associated with everywhere. He was awarded a membership in the Centennial Honor Roll for Alpha Zeta. He served in many positions with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and especially enjoyed his service with the college student wards. He and his famil! y! appreciated those who helped him with his long illness with Parkinson's disease. A sister Stella Papa-Dakis, Bountiful and a brother, Nyle Matthews, Richfield, survive him. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cedar City 7th and 9th Ward LDS Church, 256 South 900 West, Cedar City, Utah. Viewings will be held on Monday, March 26, 2007 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Southern Utah Mortuary in Cedar City at 190 North and 300 West, and also on Tuesday, March 27 one hour prior to the funeral service from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Cedar City Cemetery.
