Linford MONTPELIER — Rex Burton Linford, 84, passed away Thursday, March 23, 2006, with his wife by his side at the Bear Lake Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was born August 7, 1921, the eldest child of Frank Burton and Lavina Mary Keetch Linford in St. Charles, Idaho. He grew up in the family home in St. Charles and attended grades one through eight there. He then attended and graduated from Fielding High School in 1940. Following high school, Rex worked on the family farm until February 1941, when he left home to work for an uncle in Shelley, Idaho, milking cows and feeding sheep. He established his hard work ethic at a very early age and continued throughout his life serving others. He was always assisting others with yard work, planting, trimming, fencing, repair work, window washing and any other chore needing done. In October 1942, Rex enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II until he was discharged in January 1946. From his service to his country, Rex always remained very patriotic and loyal to his freedoms. After his discharge, Rex worked at various jobs in the Bear Lake Valley. He married Joan Jensen in August 1951, and to this union was born one son, Darlo. They were later divorced. Rex worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 36 years, 18 in Montpelier and 18 in Pocatello, and then retired in 1986. Rex then began working with Leonard Matthews at Matthews Mortuary as an assistant and continued until the fall of 2005. He found this job extremely interesting, and often remarked how much he enjoyed his association with so many people. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served in various positions, some of which were the MIA, the high priest’s group, first counselor in the Montpelier Fifth Ward bishopric and most importantly as a faithful and dedicated home teacher for more than 60 years. June 18, 1993, Rex married Sarah Jane Olsen Boehme. Along with this union, Rex inherited Sarah Jane’s eight children and their families. One of the highlights of their marriage was the eight and a half years they worked as officiators in the Logan temple. They worked together keeping a large yard, raising a garden and raspberries, attending family gatherings and taking some memorable vacations. Rex is survived by his wife, Sarah Jane; one son, Darlo Linford; a grandson, Sterling (Alisha) Linford; a granddaughter, Kimberly Linford; and two great-grandchildren; eight stepchildren, Karla (Sherwin) Mangum, Nick Boehme, Sheila (Clarence) Gummow, Roxann (Steve) Bush, Denise (Garth) Boehme, Bryce Boehme, Robyn (Chad) Hulme and Todd (Angel) Boehme; 33 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara (Roger) Stephens; a brother, Harold Charles (Lucille) Linford; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant brother, Joseph Russell and a sister, Althena. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 28 at noon in the Montpelier Stake Center, 340 N. Fifth St. Friends may visit with family at Matthews Mortuary on Monday evening, March 27 from 6 to 8 p.m., and on Tuesday at the church from 10 to 11:45 a.m. The interment will be in the Ovid Cemetery.
