He was the 9th of 10 boys born to this family. As a young man, NeVille sang with his cousin, Toby Wilks, on the street corners in Utah. He had a beautiful tenor voice, and his wife and daughters enjoyed gathering around the player piano and singing with him. "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" and "My Wild Irish Rose" seemed to be his favorite songs. NeVille enlisted in the United States Navy on his 29th birthday in 1943. He served in the South Pacific aboard Auxiliary Tug Fleet 114 alongside the larger Navy ships of the 58th Task Force. He was able to watch as the Marines carried the American flag up Mt. Suribachi near the end of the war in 1945. On December 31, 1960, NeVille married the love of his life, Nona Mae Howard, in Boise, Idaho. They had six daughters and were married 45 years at the time of his death. He worked for St. Luke“s Hospital as a maintenance engineer until he retired in 1977. He remained very active until he became ill a week before his death. NeVille was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers. He is survived by his wife, Nona; six daughters, Judi (Les) Stone-Aaen, Juanita (Ken) Tigges, Grace (Robert) Lazenby, Deana (Dean) Richmond, Melanie (Greg) Mitchell, Beverly (Greg) Tank; 28 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A third great-grandchild is expected in Aug. 2006. He is also survived by one brother, Newell Bruce Thornock, of Bloomington, Idaho. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Veterans Hospital in Boise for their loving care of our father during his illness and to all the friends and neighbors who took the time to care and show their support. Donations may be made in his name to the Idaho Youth Ranch or the Dakota Indian Children. Published in the Idaho Statesman on 2/20/2006.
