He was born Sept. 27, 1927, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Leslie John and Iva Carol Thornock Hill. He was brought up in St. Charles and attended school there. He was an avid sportsman and his favorite hobby was fishing. His family moved to California in the early 1940s, where he attended school until the age of 16, when he quit and with his best friend, Bill Scott, joined the Merchant Marines. He then returned to Idaho, where he purchased Ivan Beck’s store and service station. He then sold that business in 1971, and became a painting contractor and then because of ill health took an early retirement. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served as president of the Sunday school and secretary of the high priests. He served as mayor of St. Charles for 16 years, receiving a certificate of recognition from the state of Idaho.
