Knowles, 79, passed away on Friday, Nov. 18, 2005, at his home in Montpelier. He was born on Dec. 24, 1925, to Bert C. and Gladys Vanatta Knowles in Shoshone, Idaho. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman 1st Class through World War II on the USS Achernar AKA-53 and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He worked as a service oiler in the Operating Engineers Union and was employed in Southeast Idaho for more than 50 years. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapshooter, and also enjoyed camping. Bert is survived by his wife, Eileen; two sisters, Francis and Mildred; and one brother Wally; seven children, Babe, Loretta, Kathi, Rosemary, Gene, Joe and Nora; also by numerous grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Funeral services are scheduled Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 1 p.m. in the Matthews Mortuary Chapel. Friends may visit with family at the mortuary Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. Burial will be in the Montpelier Cemetery.
